Do we need "Truth in Campaigning" laws?

We regulate the ways in which corporations can advertise to consumers and potential investors. But at the moment flagrant misrepresentation and even outright lying is commonly permitted in political campaigning. Is this acceptable? Is the possibility of corruption when enforcing such a law too serious?

I would expect dramatically flawed enforcement of such laws.

Agreed, but it would sure be nice to have some expectation of the turth being told.

i doubt there's much that can be done.

i will say that the 501c4 negative ads make me want to vote against the side that is running them almost invariably. i'm really not looking forward to the proliferation of them, which has already begun somewhat. i can only imagine the kinds of ads i'll see in the wide open 2016 race.

Pretty much impossible to enforce. The potential for abuse would be massive.

Forget the Amendments, this whole ball of wax belongs under "truth in advertising".
And this we do not have, not completely..
To have this, we need a better people, people who tell the truth naturally... and people who know how to listen..

I voted "no" because the lawyers will just find loopholes to get around them anyways.
Also, we need to legalize recreational drugs and prostitution.

Yes, we should, but as others have said, it wouldn't make any difference. As they say, you can tell when a politician is lying, their lips are moving.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.
