it's gonna happen - benefits are now the largest item in the DOD budget; bigger than pay. in a world of shrinking budgets, there just isn't a way to continue to fill our missions without cutting benefits.

as for whether "I am a vet"... technically? I fit all the definitions; got my little ribbons that say I am. I dunno, though. I just can't shake the deep sense that there is a qualitative difference between me and the real vets, the wwii, korea, and vietnam guys.

It is weird in that I do not consider myself in the same league as those type vets...but I put all the other vets in the same category with the WW1/2, Korea/Vietnam folks.

hopefully I'll get to go to Afghanistan in 2013, and then maybe I'll feel more like I've earned the title. Or at least less embarrassed when the guys from those earlier wars thank me "for my service"

Veterans have had an experience that I donít think is duplicated by anything else. It colors you POV forever. My father was a P40 and P47 pilot during WWII. I was in the USAF from í68 to í72.
    Very similar for me, OhISee...
One of my smart decisions, the GI bill(which I wasted), the VA mecical care (nearly priceless) and the people I knew and the things I learned, the experiences (priceless).

I'd love to see far less military(death and destruction) and a greatly expanded/enhanced peace corps(live and build).
Those who have lived thru warfare are far more "veteran" than I....only the peaceful "cold" war...

You are, IMO, partially right, still we ,peaceniks, served and committed the same as they did...Their risks were far greater, as are their benefits - which is as it should be....

To our Rudy Guliani (occupy a job) :leave your ivory tower and take the time to look around... Go to a "job service" place and look at the faces....then think !!
Or, go to any store, and read "made in China".
Leave the foolish comments to me.
For instance - make voting and veterans day a 48 hour long national holiday, more time to reflect and two days to vote..
Media.... hold back on the guesses and results ...take a break and give us one...
