while not the King, he was a member of football royalty.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

This thread is the first information I have on him. Not a football fan, so probably won't learn much more about him either.

Re: Am I the only one who didn't know who Joe Paterno was?

Once upon a time, there were three giants in Big Ten football. And this was in the day when Big Ten football was a really big deal in college football much more than it is today having been eclipsed by other conferences. The Three Giants were Woody Hayes of Ohio State, Bo Schembechler of Michigan and Joe Paterno of Penn State. Paterno not only coached longer than the other two but survived them as both have long ago passed on.

He was the head coach winning more games in Division I than anybody who ever held that job anywhere. And that is something nobody else can claim.

I still don't know who he is.
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.
