No need to go into detail about what they are, but just very curious as to how many. I recently ran across stats saying over half of America is on multiple scripts... wondered how that bears out here...

The poll will be anonymous. I will reveal my own script usage later in the thread.

But to spur discussion, is modern medicine is "better living through chemistry"?
Would you be alive today without your scripts?

Just to be clear, I'm not looking for anyone to divulge in their posts what or how many scripts they're taking. That will just lead to everyone claiming none.

Vote honestly and annonymously in the poll... but keep the discussion to aspects of modern pharmacology and medical practices... unless you feel like divulging more of course.

I take none, but that is probably due to avoiding doctors like the plague.

I don't take any. Some would probably say I need to.

Interesting... when was the last time you took a pharmaceutical?

Prescription med? Probably when I had gout, which would have been about 10 years ago. That was also the last time I have seen a doctor.

Now, I take tylenol, and allergy meds all the time, but nothing prescription.

zero and i hope i never have to take any. i have a very deep-seated distrust of putting medicine into my body.

I take 2 routinely and two on an as needed basis.

Two related drugs for diabetes, that's it.

Ahhh... now it's starting to look more like the 50% stats I read about.

Thank you all for adding your votes

0. I avoid taken prescriptions where/when ever possible. Even when I do have to take them I never finish using the whole prescription. There are very few prescription drugs out there (or even over the counter drugs) that does not have some sort of negative to it. I can't count the times I've seen commercials for a particular prescription drug state the side effects of thier drug and in that description include the words "death may occur" or some variation of causeing major problems there of. And there's even more commericials from sue happy lawyers that talk about presciription drugs people may have taken also.

You cant avoid taking prescription medication when you need them period...and you certainly dont need them often when young...seniors need more medication by far...

I agree. Hence why I included "where/when ever possible". ;)

I am in my 50's and just had my annual physical. blood work came back good including choleterol, blood sugar, PSA, etc. I am proud to say that I take no prescription meds.

"Better Living Through Chemistry" -- no doubt about it.

Don't control your high blood pressure? Risk stroke, heart attack, kidney problems and more. The benefits of high blood pressure medicine are vast. Need insulin? Well, if ya' don't take it, you'll be dead. So "better living" ha! Seizure meds? A Godsend to those who need them. Antibiotics? Need I even comment?

We most assuredly live better through chemistry. And when we have national health insurance and everyone has access to doctor visits and wellness exams, we'll be living even better.

I take 14 Rx drugs everyday. Better than Wheaties.

Diabetic with high blood pressure. Got no choice, take em or die.

Interesting, that in the poll so far, 10 take zero, 10 take two to five .. but no one takes just one.

Perhaps every Rx needs another Rx or two just to manage the side effects it causes.

I know that my high blood pressure is caused by my being diabetic. So along with insulin I have to take a water and blood pressure pill. So it is more likely one condition can cause multiple symptoms that require more than one medication for treatement.

Nada. Like some of the others, I try to avoid taking pharmaceuticals when I can. If I need it, I take it... but only if I'm sure I need it. My body is also very picky about meds. I don't have allergies, but there are certain kinds of drugs that my body has a strong, negative reaction to. It just does not want that in my body. So I listen to it.

I get where you're coming from, but especially with antibiotics, this can be dangerous. While it's true they usually give you a little more than you strictly need, they do it for good reason: if the course fails and the infection re-emerges, it is more likely to be drug-resistant. You may have a much harder time killing it the second time 'round, if you even can.

I hate antibiotics, and lord knows they're over-prescribed. I've had doctors give me antibiotics with no symptoms and before even getting my test results back, which I obviously didn't take (and I turned out not to need them at all, when my tests came back fine). Prescribing them willy-nilly like that is careless. So I get it.

But when I have to take them, I take all of them. A day or two after finishing my course, I eat/take a lot of probiotics to get my body back in balance. But cutting short a treatment course can be dangerous. Once I've begun, I commit to finishing unless there is a very, very good reason to stop. If I'm not sure, I don't start.

None, I avoid drugs and doctors with a religious fervour, the only ones I take are over the counter painkillers for when I have a really bad a headache or something, which is usually only once a month or less.

Im down to seven aday. I was at nine for a long time.

I take the max dose of coreg (carviderol)...It can send ya for a loop.

In my younger days I would go to the doctor for every little ailment...get some kind of drugs. I also used drugs in as a recreation. I gave all that up about 30 years ago. About 10 years ago I injured my back and I almost ruined my liver by taking too much tylenol.

I take zero prescription drugs and zero over the counter drugs. I manage my back problems with exercise and proper lifting and movement practices.

Now, I'm only 60, so I'm sure the next 10 or 20 years will bring some changes. So it goes. If I need to take drugs to stay alive, so be it.

So glad you mentioned that... so many are completely unaware of this risk. I too was unaware until a close friend who is a medical professional clued me in.

This seems to often be the case... great observation!
