If you had to choose that is.

We have a nice house in an affluent neighborhood, but one of our vehicles is ten yrs old, and isn't the prettiest thing to look at. My oldest seems to be embrarassed by it, but you know what I tell him? ''Shaddup, it's paidfor''

He basically thinks we are poor b/c we ride around in a ten yro vehicle. Teens:doh

I asked him if poor people live in a 3500 SQFT house in a nice neighborhood. Hence my poll question....

given that i commute to work, a reliable car is more important. my house isn't bad by any means, but it needs some work that i am trying to save up enough money to do.

since I spend much more time in my house than I do in my car...a nice house is more important. car? as long as it gets me from A to B I couldn't care less. I am not out to impress anyone.

My house is 3000 sq ft with a pool out back. all of my cars are at least 7 years old.

I'd rather have a nice, reliable and fuel efficient vehicle (or 3 - like we do now . . .) and live in an ok neighborhood. . . like we do now. Well - technically we're without a neighborhood seeing as how our only neighbor is a lone house across the street.

Affluent neighborhoods tend to come with tiny lots, obnoxious nosy neighbors and the like - not always - but in my experience this is how it tends to go.

Let's say a reliable vehicle (as mine is) just cosmetically kinda ugly. LOL

I really don't care, I'm not out to impress anyone. I have a nice house, don't live in a neighborhood, my closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away (we have 10 acres) and just bought two new cars this year, but couldn't care less what anyone thinks.

I can't really answer that question. I won't sacrifice efficiency, safety, and necessity by selecting a fancy car over a solid, well-built home in a good area, but I'm not going to buy an exorbitant house and leave myself in a vehicle that is unreliable and unsafe. If my car is reliable, safe, and runs well then I'm happy. If my house is secure, well-built, and located in a low-crime area then I'm happy. If the extra living room is the difference between me having a good car or driving a rust bucket then we'll skip the extra living room. And if the H3 is the difference between a privacy fence and full exposure of my home I'll downgrade to the Ford Escape.

So I guess what I'm saying is I fully intend to keep both needs in mind when I make decisions regarding either item, so as to avoid a situation where I must choose. Then again, "nice" to me is enough room for my future family, low crime, and double-ovens, which I can get for a pretty damn good price down here, so I won't have to worry too much about that kind of sacrifice.

LOL - I finally bought a van that could carry the whole family. A Mazda5. Even though it's new it's ugly as sin - I don't like it at all but it's fuel efficient and gets the job done. Now - my old and long gone Camero - that was pretty. My husband's GTO is looking good. . . but in need of a new paint job. Our most reliable one is a Nissan Sentra that's older than my kids. LOL - but it still packs on the miles like a good ole workhorse. I've had it repainted once - going from a cop-eye-catching black and chrome makeover to a nice blue that goes undetected it seems.

The money I've 'saved' by living in a sub-standard home has been put towards renovating the home. We bought it at 87K and now it's a snazzy 130K and climbing . . . we are the affluent neighbors :)

I'd be happy with an average house because I'm not materialistic with most things, but I'm a car guy. I want one of these. ford gt40 red spf 3.jpg

In the spirit of the question, I chose nice house. That doesn't mean McMansion, it means nice and well-kept in a decent neighborhood. Age of the home is irrelevant. Could be 50 yrs old, but as long as it is well-kept and in a decent neighborhood, it qualifies as a nice house.

I am always trying to impress someone, mainly me, then my wife , then my son-in-law and daughter..
This I think is normal.
Impressing is done much easier with an automobile....but if you are not taken in with my 15 year old Saab 900, then its your loss.
The house......not proud of this, its a hundred years old to several years old (build and upgrades), but the design dates back to the 18th century...about as old as our very dated Constitution...
Affluent neighborhood ?
Not in conservative, but poor southern PA.
Here the people work, at least most do...
A decent house is far more important than a transitory motor vehicle...
Obnoxious neighbors ?
I have to watch myself here, I could be the one (being a slop, a collector, and bi-polar at the same time)..
IMO, the wealthy can be the most disagreeable/unlikeable of all...I would not want to be Ebenezer Scrooges neighbor.

I really could go either way... either a respectable car and a great house. Or a tiny dwelling somewhere decent and a great vehicle depending on how my lifestyle goes.

Our kids love our sports car - it looks nice, goes fast, it's loud. It's not brand-new, either - it was actually more affordable than our Mazda and is more fuel efficient than the SUV I use to rely on. I get a thrill out of them enjoying it so much.

Sad...
Our society will be so much better when the wealthy/pseudo wealthy begin to care.

LOL - he doesn't care what YOU think and I think that's his right. . . and that in a casual discussion about living in an affluent neighborhood vs being able to afford a vehicle.

Nice house. If the car works and is safe, the age isn't a big deal. I use public transport most of the time anyway.

Personally, I'd rather have a nice 3 bedroom, multi-level condo in a nice community over the vehicles every day.

You think people ought to be shallow?

my house is 41 ft long and 13.5 feet wide. it floats. my car has 137,000 miles on it. i'm good.

We bought a used small house boat and set it up on a lake in NM back in the day. it was like 10 of us who went in on it. We called it "the stabbin cabin" :pimpdaddy:

lol.......mine's a sailboat. rocks with the best of them.

I was mortified by my parents cars at various times in my childhood. Even got in a fight with some 8th graders when I was in 6th grade because they were talking smack about it. I recall seeing a cute girl from a class and then our parents parked next to each other...ugh. Can't be helped, that sort of **** is important when young. No need for luxury, but average at least was what I wanted growing up. Just average, nothing great, nothing absurd.

We have a similar situation at home now. I want my wife to upgrade her wagon to better match my car and our neighborhood. She's putting up a fight but then her car is only about 5 years old and in good condition...
My entire childhood and my twenties were spent in about the cheapest cars in existence. These days, I have no qualms now about driving in a nice ride that I enjoy getting into and driving every single day.

The poll can be misleading only because the difference in cost is so great. I'd much rather take $10K out of the house and put it into the car. $10K difference in a house means nothing, but in a car it can be a huge difference.

Hot tub time machine, based loosely on a true story I see.
