How important is the VP candidate in your Presidential election decisions?

The VP is very important in my opinion, not because the VP has a lot of power, but because the choice of VP says a lot about the presidential candidate. The president chooses the VP as his(her) partner, his confidant, his friend, his successor. A poor choice of VP tells the public that a candidate makes poor decisions.

...Which goes back to the fact that the only important choice is the one at the top of a ticket.

The VP is not going to do anything that their boss wouldn't want them to.

As for those who are saying that Sarah Palin hurt McCain - you are vastly underestimating how reluctant conservatives were to vote for the man. If it weren't for Palin, many Republicans would have stayed home. Ultimately, she helped him more than hurt him - most of the people who hated her would have voted for Obama either way. McCain's poll numbers greatly rose when he picked her, and did not subside until the financial crisis (after that, any Republican candidate would have been a sacrificial lamb, even one as moderate as McCain).

I hear people say this and I can only answer for the people I know but every rep that didnt vote rep stated her as the reason :shrug: does that make it true for all reps, of course not im just saying i have no reason to believe Palin HELPED at all. She was good at RALLYING the troops but no to get herself in the white house, theres a big difference. I also know people that voted for obama that werent going to vote at all because of her, again just what "i" experienced.

No, I completely disagree with you here. McCain lost the votes of a lot of people were closer to the center than he would have had he picked someone legitimate. I don't think anyone who notes Palin's negative impact on McCain thinks the Palin choice has so much an impact on conservatives more to the right. On the contrary, we're pointing to the moderates and 'slightly conservative people that McCain lost. That said, he would have lost regardless of who he picked, but picking Palin made it worse.

I was going to vote McCain right up until he picked her, then I voted against him. Palin only energized people who were likely to vote for McCain anyhow, she didn't actually do anything that a more credible VP candidate couldn't. Well, she did cost him the election, I guess that's something.
