Should animals be granted personhood?

Which ones are people?

My cat can open doors that are latched shut, move and hide a food bowl so the other cat doesn't eat it, recognizes his name and several instructive phrases, and has changed the channel on the TV to Animal Planet twice.

I think he should be able to vote in the next presidential election. In cat years he's about 24.

He should at least be a YouTube Star! You should so videotape him:)

Going on from the PETA thread, the argument is that smart animals should be granted personhood, and/or special legal protection, so after doing a few seconds of research, I found a list of the top 10 smartest animals. Should you agree that some animals should be granted personhood, which of the animals would you like to see as people?

Your poll is incomplete.

The correct answer is NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Only corporations and humans are people.

Animals should not be granted personhood because they are not people. Animals should be slow smoked at approximatley 225 deg. F.

Wiki says supporters of corporations having the protection of the U.S. Constitution claim its because corporations "are organizations of people, and that these people should not be deprived of their human rights when they act collectively." Personhood rights allow them to "sue and to be sued", provide "a single entity for easier taxation and regulation", simplify "complex transactions that would otherwise involve, in the case of large corporations, thousands of people" and these things protect the rights of the shareholders" collectively.

So, if an animal 1.) is made up of people; 2.) has the ability to sue and be sued; and 3.) pays taxes - then they should probably be granted personhood style protection. Otherwise, they should be treated as a sole-proprietorship - meaning, the rights and obligations pass through to the owner of the business or animal. The owner still has obligations (in a business they might have fair hire laws, etc.), so for an animal, the owner would have "fair treatment" obligations.

While they are not persons; Elephants, Great Apes and Dolphins should have greater legal protections.

I support bacteria rights. They should have the right to work, vote, have sex, etc.

Woot! Rats are in the lead!

I voted for the rat only.

do you know what those whack jobs really believe in

they consider pet ownership the same as slavery

they want to ban all meat eating and all hunting and all fishing

damn right I don't want them breeding.

Famke Janssen and Licorice don't believe pet ownership is slavery.

Should animals be granted personhood?

Animals should only be granted personhood when they are found to be more valuable then some people. So yes. Sometimes. LOL.

No. Anyone that wants to give an animal the same rights as the people typing on here are assholes. /End thread

How many more instances of foolishness will be added to PETA's litany?

None, but if they were granted personhood, would only humans have to respect those rights?

If birds have rights, and my cat catches and kills one, will she be put on trial for murder?

I think if a bird that flies, gets caught by a cat that does not fly, they deserve to die.

Squirrels. Squirrels are awesome. The rest of them can go **** themselves.

I am highly offended by the route this thread is taking. I am a life long members of PETA as is my father and hos before him.

Hilarious.

I believe in an actual portrayal of the people involved with wanting human rights for animals.
