    (Too high/Too low)
Too low, possibly. Too complex and time-intensive, definitely.

A streamlined legal immigration process would be good, IMO.

Some are, some are not. The problem with the illegal part is, while they are all technically criminals (due to the illegal immigration bit), a portion of them are ACTUAL criminals, who would not have made it through a legal immigration process.

Now, seriously doubt that it is possible to stop all illegal immigration at the borders, but I think better border enforcement is part of dealing with this issue.

That, and clear-cut laws at federal, state, and local levels for discovering and dealing with illegal immigrants.

Personally, I think give them a student visa, possibly only if they are paying for college themselves. If itís on the taxpayer dime (and while that seems improbable, itís probably happening somewhere), Iíd say kick them out or eliminate that source of tuition.

If theyíre paying their way, Iíd let them finish.

Itís more money into the college (and the economy, probably), and educated persons are always a positive wherever they exist in the world.

    Meh, I dunno...

    Very Poorly.

But I didnít expect better than this, so itís not really a surprise.

It's happening somewhere. Here, in California. Illegals are now eligible for taxpayer-funded scholarships. For every dollar going to someone here illegally, that's one dollar less going to a legal immigrant or citizen. Disgraceful.

Governor Brown Signs Second Half Of California Dream Act | Fox News

SACRAMENTO – Illegal immigrants can now apply for state-funded scholarships and aid at state universities after Gov. Jerry Brown announced Saturday that he has signed the second half of a legislative package focused on such students.

AB131 by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, is the second half of the California Dream Act. Brown signed the first half of the package in July, which approved private scholarships and loans for students who are illegal immigrants.

Under current law, illegal immigrant students who have graduated from a California high school and can prove they're on the path to legalize their immigration status can pay resident tuition rates. The bill would allow these students to apply for state aid.

Not to be an ass, but I should have added the caveat "except perhaps in California"

Re: What do you think about immigration?

    1. Do you think that the number of legal immigrants permitted into the US, which is 800,000 a year, is too high or too low?
    (Too high/Too low)
Irrelevant, immigrants should be able to come into this country IF and ONLY IF they prove to be competent/potentially useful to our society. Example: College students (especially grad students) and professionals (doctors, lawyer (maybe not? we have too many law school graduates), researchers, etc.) Additionally, anyone willing to work and pay taxes should at least get a shot at coming here.
    2. Do you think illegal immigration is a problem?
    (Yes/No)
Yes. The immigrants that come here aren't paying taxes, so they aren't contributing to society in any way, and often are a burden on our society. (see below)

    3. Do you think that illegal immigrants are a burden or are of benefit to society?
(They are a burden/They are of benefit)
Like I said, a burden, because they can often use our schools/hospitals, but because they are forced to live in the shadows, they don't even pay any taxes.
    4. Do you feel that an illegal immigrant student who is planning to graduate from college should be given a visa in order to finish college or should be deported?
    (Given a visa/Should be deported)
Given a visa, and they should be given a work visa afterwards. I think that given the chance, many college graduates would choose to stay here rather than go home to their native countries, where pay is not as good. I'm not sure they should be given any kind of state/federal assistance, though, if they are found to be illegal. But if they want to pay to finish college themselves, sure.
    5. Rate how you feel the Obama Administration is handling the issue of immigration.
    (Very Well/Well/Poorly/Very Poorly/Don't Know)
Poorly. He has all of the wrong priorities, just like everyone else. If we want to secure our borders, we need to work more closely to improve conditions in bordering countries including Mexico and all of the Caribbean countries, and beef up security at our ports and borders. If we withdrew our troops from the Middle-East, we could spend 1/10th of that money and have much better border security. What to do with the illegals that are currently in our country is tougher. Maybe keep students, but not anyone else. If they don't want to pay any taxes or otherwise try to contribute, they should definitely be deported. That's all I can really say for sure.

I think the number of legal immigrants is fine.

Some are a burden, some are beneficial, others are neither. I think there are more who are a burden than who are a benefit though.

This is a bit of a tougher question. It depends on a couple things in my mind. First is whether the student himself made the choice to immigrate illegally, or whether he was brought over by his parents as a child. If it was the former, deport him. If the latter, then I would be more inclined to help him on the path to citizenship, since a college education could make him a valuable member of society.

Poorly, as has every other recent administration.

I'm excited to debate with you all!
1.) The number is just about right. I'd say if the natural born citizen growth rate continues into shrinkage as it has been then that would be the time to increase allowable immigration.
2.) Illegal immigration is overall a problem. While some good people are desperate for a better life and break the laws there are also the true criminals who come here and really do damage.
3.) They are a burden when they come to do harm or do not produce what they take in. They are a benefit when they assimilate, produce, and/or bring a new perspective to our country.
    4) Should be deported but allowed the opportunity to apply for a temporary stay if they can satisfy a board of some sort that they are going to graduate, apply for legal citizenship, and will be productive citizens.
5.) Poorly, but then again this problem has been ignored so long he's got plenty of company in that rating.
Neither side in an argument can find the truth when both make an absolute claim on it.

Re: What do you think about immigration?

Illegal immigration is a government subsidy to entities that depend on cheap labor. The schools, the hospitals and health clinics, the police, fire, you name it pays for illegal immigration. The employers of cheap labor reap the benefits.

It is not the police, fire, schools, and hospitals who have expensive lobbyists in Washington, but the big employers.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the government that is supposed to be of, by, and for the people hasn't done squat about illegal immigration since the Eisenhower Administration.
