Re: Death Penalty: Right or Wrong?

    Wrong:

    1. Costs way more than keeping the prisoner in prison for life
    2. Is used to cases where there is reasonable doubt of the prisoner's guilt (Troy Davis)
    3. Is proven to not deter violent crime or crime in general
    4. Is disproportionately given to minorities

There is no positive effect of executing a prisoner other than the emotional satisfaction some people get from knowing the prisoner is killed.

Nay. Because I don't trust our legal system to always get the verdict right. If we wrongfully convict someone of murder and they get life in prison, we can let him out if we find out the conviction was wrong. If we've killed him, we cannot bring him back to life.

Re: Death Penalty: Right or Wrong?

Absolutely for it. There are some crimes that are so heinous that the criminal loses their right to breathe the same air as decent people. I also think that anyone in prison for life without the possibility of parole ought to just be put down. There's no purpose in keeping them alive.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Well the way to solve that is to keep it for crimes where there is no doubt of guilt.

Really? You have some doubts that Jared Laughner (Tucson shooter) and Nadal Hasan (Ft. Hood shooter) are actually innocent? Catching them at the scene and, in fact, shooting Hasan isn't compelling enough evidence for you and, of course, anyone who testifies that they actually witnessed these two killers do what they did are what? Lying

An innocent person can be released later, but no one can be brought back from the dead. Also, I really don't think that anyone is beyond rehabilitation. None of us are morally superior enough to pass this kind of judgement on another.
And you're quite comfortable making the judgment that the victims life is not worth the same as the killers life. I guess it all comes down to where your sympathies lie.

We've talked about this in other threads. To oppose the death penalty, the guilt of killer and and the life of the victim have to be irrelevant. Since those are two things I cannot, just, put aside any consideration for, I support the death penalty. Sometimes I hear of some particularly horrific killing (like the man being drug to death behind a pick up truck) and I truly wonder how anyone wants anything other than death for a person who could do something like that.

    State your reasons.
1.It serves as the ultimate punishment.
2.Tax payers are not forced to provide room, board, medical and security for the rest of that scumbags life.
3.No chance of what happened in the UK with that terrorist being released for a oil deal under the guise of some idiotic notion that dying scumbags should for some reason be released.
    4.No tv interviews
    5.The criminal deserves it.
6.Most important part is justice for the victims.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Can you bring him back? I'm a pretty powerful slinger when I set my mind to it and I even know a thing or two about medicine, but even I can't raise the dead. Making more dead ain't upholding life.

See, and I think exacting the highest possible price for killing someone else does uphold life. Failing to do that indicates belief that the life of the victim is worth less than the life of the killer.
