Short of armed revolution, voting is the only way that we citizens can effect change in our Government. Assuming that the choice of candidates have expressed their positions with at least some degree of truthfullness (sure, Wilbur..), which single statement stated to be at or near the TOP of a candidate's agenda would be most likely to convince you to vote for that person? The following is clarification of position...

1. ENFORCED IMMIGRATION POLICY: If an immigrant has broken our laws by entering our country illegally, they should be arrested and deported without exception.

2. FAIR FOREIGN TRADE: Free Trade Agreements must permit an unrestricted flow of goods in both directions. Anything less is not "Free Trade". Exhorbitant trade deficits are harmful to our country and it's citizens. When such deficits are the result of unfair trade practices we should mirror those same practices against countries that refuse to trade fairly.

3. CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS: Our founding fathers intended our congressional representatives to be comprised of citizen legislators that would be sent to Washington by their constituants, often at great hardship to themselves, to perform a valuable and necessary service for their country, then return home to their normal lives. Instead we have managed to create an elite class of career politicians whose primary interest seems to be just getting reelected for another term which is counterproductive and often rife with hidden agendas to payoff campaign contributors at the citizens' expense. Just as we limit the term of President to two terms, we should also limit the terms of those in Congress.

4. BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT: A Constitutional Amendment requiring a balanced budget except during times of true national emergencies declared by Congressional vote.

5. TAX REFORM NEEDED: The U.S. Tax Code is a mess. We even have the ridiculous situation where a taxpayer takes his return to the IRS for help and they make a mistake, the taxpayer not only has to pay those taxes still due but also must pay the PENALTY for the mistake made by HIS government! What was once 400 pages in 1913 is today over 70,000 (!) pages long. The Tax Code must be simplified to the extent that the average person can figure their own taxes with nothing more than simple arithmetic. The tax rates should be as nearly flat as reasonable (which meets the dictionary's definition of "fair") but more importantly we must greatly reduce the list of politically motivated special interest deductions.

My hot button is when people think if the rich pay more taxes its "unfair" and going to cause a catastrophe and when people dont understand socialism.
