Which event was more damaging to our countries future freedom?

The first event was "in our face" obvious attack of horror, despair and pain.

The second was a SCOTUS ruling and forever insidious and undermining "We the People".

I will continue to add links and thoughts ... welcome all perspectives.

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission : SCOTUSblog

Vote and Discuss.

With a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that corporations and unions may now directly and expressly advocate for the election or defeat of candidates for federal office with unlimited funding and influence, as long as they do not coordinate their efforts with campaigns or political parties. Many predict the impacts of the decision will be immense and far-reaching, both for nonprofit voter engagement and political discourse as a whole. This ruling would also allow foreign governments to impact our elections with unlimited influence through funding.

Quick note ... The actual ruling was 01/21/2010 yet the world learned on 01/22. I had wanted to start this poll during the mourning of the victims of 9/11/01 yet I did not want to disrespect that tragedy. Yet so often ... unless there is explosive in your face violence ... people have a natural instinct not to realize other acts that are far more damaging in the long term.

That was the significance of my juxtaposition poll.

Although this ruling impacts each election including that of local judges ... the election of 2012 willbe the first Presidential election to be held under this ruling.

It was a divided Supreme Court last Thursday invalidated the decades old federal prohibition against independent expenditures by corporations in federal political campaigns, holding that corporations have the same First Amendment speech rights as individuals.

This decision overruled the Court's 2003 opinion in McConnell v. FEC, in which the Court previouslyupheld McCain-Feingold provisions regulating political advertising by corporations and unions.

Consider the possible effect of this decision on foreign political spending in U.S. elections.

I say 9/11 because it got us into multiple wars and has slowly drained our country of resources. It was not a tough pick for me, since 9/11 was such a horrible day, and that ruling, while it does undermine our election process and government as a whole, is only a symptom of many larger problems.

Good post ... thanks. Although I appreciate your awareness of the insidious undermining of our democratic republic by those five judges whose actions rival the 9/11 assault imho.

The history of the Court’s decision is as extraordinary as they ruled that corporations, which are only fictitious persons created by law, do not have the same First Amendment rights to political activity as real people do.

Sadly ... foreign interests, big money and unions can impact the outcome of our elections and put in office a person who might represent the interest of powers who do not have the best interest of "We the people".

Whysoserious ... good point regarding the drain on our economy by multiple wars.

Citizen United protected our freedoms so this was a bit of a silly question.

indeed. neither of these events harmed our future freedom. under the law struck down in Citizens United the government claimed the power to ban books, for crying out loud.

if you want to, i guess you could count the 9/11 attacks, as they led to an increase in spending, which increased our debt, which is threatning our future freedom....

in reality, America hasn't been at war. the volunteer force has been at war. America has been at the mall, using their houses as ATM's to buy bigger flat-screens.

I remember the GWSnotForBrains election 5-4 and now we have the GWSnotForBrains great depression.
What can we expect from Corporations as people? I hate to imagine.
