There really wasn't anything else the could have raffled? How about a gift card, savings bond, cash.

Let's turn this around a bit. Let's say that about half a year ago, in a certain town, there was an incident where a driver ran a 1968 Ford Mustang into a crowd and killed several people. Now, half a year later, some organization has a raffle and the object of the raffle is a brand new 2011 Ford F350 truck, donated by a local dealership. Should people be incensed that someone is raffling off a Ford, the same make of vehicle that was used in the mass-runover? Even though it is a different model and type of vehicle and the incident happened several months ago? Just because it is a "Ford" brand vehicle?

That's about how much the one has to do with the other.

    1. Some people like talking about their favorite guns.
    2. Some people know it annoys some people and derive some amusement from that fact.

Its a cry fest. Oh those evil people are selling a gun that is similar to the gun used to shot our lady. Even if it was the same gun this would be a non issue that only cry babies without a life would care about.

So would it make a difference to you if the fund raiser and raffle was in a different Congressional district in Arizona?

I am more concerned that the gunman (Jared Loughner) will not be held accountable for his action. Yes, I know he is one sick person. Even the most insane make decision. Though the decisions may be based on some other form of reality.
Yes, it would bother me less and maybe that isn't logical. I'm also concerned that someone like Loughner not get a gun this way when they could not get one otherwise.

I think it is all about the timing. I wouldn't expect the gunshops to close their businesses because of the shooting. But because this killing of 6 innocent people took such a political fight I question the Republicans choice.
Sure, it is definitely their choice but as evident it is causing some disdain. Just like wanting to build a mosque next to the 9-11 center, they have that right but ....

If you win a gun in a raffle, you still have to fill out the paperwork and be background-checked via the NICS system, just as if you bought it. No one is going to get the gun who couldn't buy one in a gunstore.

That is not the same at all. The primary purpose of a car is not to kill anything. People don't associate cars with murder the way guns are. How about if instead of several people being shot, several were stabbed and killed. I'm not exactly sure how that would happen, but go with me here. Then later the GOP raffled off a set of knives. That would be in bad taste.

On a side note, this would be less troubling if it were some other group holding the raffle. Say the local chapter of the NRA. Somehow it is worse because it's the GOP. It feels like a political move and not just fundraising.

    1. Cars kill more people than guns. Lots more.

Many of us don't associate guns with murder. We associate guns with shooting sports, hunting, target shooting, and self-protection. We don't look at a gun and think "Bad gun!! Evil gun!! Oh, you're just waiting to jump up and kill someone aren't you!!!"

Nope. We look at 'em and think "GOOD gun! Useful tool for sport, hunting and protection." Then we gives' 'em a pat on the muzzle and a Scooby Snack for being so good...

Bingo, you hit it there. One can't ignore the political undertones to this. Five years down the road I really don't think anyone would pause at a raffle of a gun by the party. But seriously, they need to get a clue.
