Andre Carson: Tea party wants blacks 'hanging on a tree'
Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat from Indiana who serves as the CBC’s chief vote counter, said at a CBC event in Miami that some in Congress would “love to see us as second-class citizens” and “some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me…hanging on a tree.”

Do you think that anyone elected to Congress under the TEA party banner would love to see Andre and other blacks hanging on a tree?
If so - who, specifically?
What, specifically, makes you think so?

I think if you're going to make claims like that you should be prepared to back them up with direct quotations and evidence. Did he receive e-mails? Letters, phone calls? Did somebody identifying themselves as a TP member specifically say something like this? Or is he following media hyper over isolated racism and turning it into a broader statement against a larger group? And if he's exaggerating the issue he should be made to apologize for making the attempt to incite more hatred, violence, and racial tension.

Its absurd accusations like this that make stating your case against the teaparty agenda muddled and damn near impossible...

The teaparty is not my cup of tea but we shouldnt be using the same worn out arguments to try and bring out their faults...theres plenty about the teaparty agenda that can be argued without rhetoric like this...I agree with tess

Wouldn't mind seeing this guy hanging from a tree...or Congresswoman Waters for that matter.

The fact that they're driving so hard against the TEA party is that they are a legitimate threat. Although originally a libertarian movement, it's pretty much been hijacked by the Republicans and religious right, and Democrats are worried that some of them or left-center independents who fancied themselves "tea partiers" might follow the crowd and switch sides. It's not unheard of; this same thing happened in the early 90s when Perot's Reform party was highly damaging to the parties, and the presidency was decided by which of the two major powerhouses could swing Reformers back to their side.

They weren't sounding this stupid though. This caricature should just do some soft-shoe and shut the hell up.

Legitimate threat How...their numbers are dropping consistently looking back, the teaparty will be a blip...they are a short sighted special interest group who as they get more well known and vocal and their real agenda gets more clarity they get more unpopular....they are a short term phenomena. Moderate republican rejection will insure their demise

There's no doubt that the introduction of the religious "good ol' boys" didn't help matters much here, but it's still a legitimately motivated bloc of votes either side will probably need to secure the presidency.

Don't discount the tea partiers. They have lost some sanity and rationality, but sane and rational is not criteria for voting in this country. Obama is proof of that.

I agree with that ... I see it in the same light as those claming Obama is a Moslem.

Voters that would be inclined to vote teaparty have declined dramatically since the nov ...the actions of teaparty govs has done alot to bring the teapartys real agenda to the forefront...teaparty supporters are a dwindling minority..

That's kind of misleading because most of them were not actually going to vote for a TEA party third-party candidate. Basically, the vast majority of third party votes are sold to the highest bidder between the two sides of the aisle.

What Tea Party third party candidates? I know of none.

Advocating a lynching is disgusting.

Would I be disgusting if I thanked the post?

Asking the question indicates you have already taken some steps towards its obvious answer.

Yes, and no.

There are two ways to avoid active racism. To be reflective and open-minded, or to have it forced upon you by your culture.

Our mainstream culture tends to suppress active racism. The Tea Party isn't reflective and open-minded.

The actual "hanging on the tree" image he is evoking is provocative symbolism. Personally, if I wanted to make a point like this, I would just accuse the Tea Party of being unreflective and close-minded and then elaborate on why this makes them unsuitable for public office. Provocative symbolism, however, is the official political language of the United States.

So... if not for the cultural pressures that suppress open racism, the elected members of TEA party would be openly racist?

Do you have any specific information on/from any of them that supports this, or were you simply letting your partisan bigotry slip out from under your skirt?

that is a disgusting comment and confirms my impression about you based on everything else you have written like this.

I think he should have said the tea party is perceived by democrats as a threat, not that they actaully are a threat.

Carson is just another pathetic liberal democrat nut making baseless accusations of racism about republicans just like a lot of other liberal nuts do.

I think it is worse than that. I think he used this language to get face time on camera and get everybody talking about him. No intelligent person could honestly think anybody wants to string up black representatives. He is a very dishonest "man".

You have to know when to take something seriously and when not to.
