Just wondering which one most of DP thinks is the most important. Which one should not have funding cut or should have funding increased?

The one you get is the most important.

I can agree with that  But also, which from the list do you think is the most important compared to the others?

I can see where there is a place for all of those.

I think they all have merit. I think academics should come first though.
The least important (and not ion your list) IMHO should be football scholarships.

The most important scholarships are academic scholarships awarded to those who are in financial needs.

I disagree insofar as a number of football programs pay for themselves while generating extra revenue for the school. Athletic programs also increase the popularity of the school for future applicants and create school spirit among the student body.

Also, I have a question regarding the OP/poll. Most important according to who? The school? Society as a whole? The student body?

Why single out football? You're on notice buddy.

Another type of scholarship is one based on shortages of a certain profession.

I think most of them have their merits but I can tell you the one I think it is not important and that is the "Racial/diversity scholarships". Race should have no bearing on whether or not someone gets into college, get a job or anything else.

If a benefactor is setting the terms of a scholarship that he is funding, then I don't much care what criteria he's using to award the money. It's his money and he can do whatever he likes.

Now, if the school is using its general endowment, and I've donated to that endowment, then I care that they not award scholarships based on race. Those should be eliminated. Same too with community service. The only scholarships that a institute of higher learning should be awarding are those which aid in scholarship. This can include scholarships predicated upon financial need so long as the student maintains performance.

Why football rather than any other sports scholarship? At least with football, in the case of the big schools, it actually generates significant revenues for the university that in many cases helps keep other programs actually up and running. I can understand aversion to sports scholarships in general but I don't get the focus specifically on football.

The question with football and other sports scholarships would be whether that revenue would be generated in the absence of those scholarships. I tend to think it would be, at least mostly. If football scholarships go away, that does not mean football programs go away.

I think the quality of the sport likely goes down, as without the scholarship you'd find a far larger push to abolish the notion of mandatory 3 years in college before going into the draft. If the quality goes down I think you'll see revenue goes down. There's already a large uneasy movement with players and fans with regards to the way the NCAA uses these kids that play football, and the only fall back that is ever given is "Well, they are getting a free education".

Take that away and there's literally little to no real arguments against the exploitation of those players by the various schools and the NCAA and the chances of the draft allowing high schoolers to enter would sky rocket imho. Make NCAA football not function as a pseudo-farm league for the NFL and watch its revenues likely plummet in my estimation.

But the talent pool won't be there. A lot of programs, particularly state schools, depend on their football teams to do very well to generate revenue from TV deals, alumni, ticket sales, etc. Scholarships are what attract the players to play football and go to college. A lot of the players probably wouldn't even consider college if they weren't recruited to play a sport and I doubt they would be willing to take out loans to go play.

The only scholarships that shouldn't exist are the ones based one race.
