Embargoing China would destroy what is left of the American economy, drop our credit rating to the bottom and maybe even start a war. Still not sure on whether than it is a good idea or not?

It would force American's to make their own products, thus creating jobs, thus increasing tax revenue, thus reducing the deficit.

The only persons being kneejerk, dumb, or intentionally dishonest are the people that think lifting an embargo with Cuba will result in a 'free trade' environment. Are you REALLY so naive as to believe that the Cuban government will freely embrace US manufactured products in a 'free trade' environment? Or that they would even BE a viable trading partner? Or that ignoring the trade imbalance and fact that US goods wouldnt be sold in Cuba, that you believe Cuban goods sold in America wouldnt simply financially support an already oppressive regime?

SHOULD the Cuban government embrace an open capitalist trade environment...well now thats a different story.

Straw man. No one said anything about "free trade"

Your idea is complete fantasy. You don't even have the most basic knowledge about how an economic system works. I really wonder what exactly do you think would happen if we embargoed China. Do you honestly believe there wouldn't be consequences?

Nothing of the sort would happen. Despite the number of products we have made in China, they've lost more manufacturing jobs than we have. First of all, technological advancement in manufacturing costs a lot of jobs and second, there are many more countries for corporations to get slave wage factory labor than just China. Chinese wages have actually been increasing the last few years, which is going to make them a less than ideal country for greedy corporations to outsource their jobs to.

Let's be realistic for a moment. Even Jimmy Carter couldn't get the embargo lifted. Would that statement imply that something runs our government that is bigger than a President or elected leader? I don't see how it could mean anything else. Check your history and see what money was damaged by Castro's takeover and then see if those big money interests wield any power today. Cuba is no threat. Never has been. The threat is the group that keeps Cuba embargoed.

Its not that simple.
An attitude change is necessary.
The consumer buys foreign as they want better.
Our management has been having trouble with this simple concept for a long time.
Our government has been trying to reduce the wages of the working man, with limited success.

China is as much a customer of ours as we are of them. How many products that are made there are made for American companies? I couldn't even begin to count. The US and China is a free market match made in heaven. The world's largest economy and the world's largest population.

Besides which, our embargoes have not caused very many governments to fall. We have active embargoes in Cuba and Iran. Last I checked, the folks we didn't like were still in charge in both of those places. We had an embargo against Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq, but that's not why he's no longer in charge. As a foreign policy instrument, it doesn't work unless the rest of the world does it too.

Lift the embargo. Let American companies sell where they need to sell in order to make money.

The wealthy "powers that be" ??
But why ?
Hatred and fear ?
Do we have these same "powers" today ?

Embargo should have ended decades ago.

It would help the medical industry a lot. Guess what America doesn't have enough of? Good doctors. Guess what you can find on every street corner in Cuba. Good doctors.

Win/win.

The sugar industry. They don't want the competition from Cubas sugar industry. Basically, the american consumer is paying extra for sugar (a sugar tax) because of the embargo. It's just one more example of corporate welfare. Our capitalists love socialism, as long as its' limited to them

We cannot end the embargo because it might bring peace and prosperity for both countries.

.

Which explains why China has such a huge trade surplus vis a vis the United States.

China does not practice a free market. If you understood their neo-mercantilist economic policy, you would know that...

I don't give a damn what happens with their country or their people to be quite honest. It's economically beneficial to have them as a trading partner. To be honest, we should just take over the place now and make it, along with Puerto Rico, Guam, etc, US states. I hate the idea of a hostile nation who we refuse to trade with being right there.

We tried that once already by force... didn't work out so well. Until Fidel is underground, nothing will change.

So, you think Fidel is the one behind the embargo?

What makes you think Cuba is a hostile Nation. I know we had to swat Haiti's Aristide when he had hundreds of free Cuban doctors running around because it makes US medicine look a lot monetaristic and selfish, but Cuba's cigar twisters don't seem to be harrassing any country. Matter of fact, the Cuban doctors are a ubiquitous helping presence in poor Latin America. The CIA will surely stamp them out soon enough. There'll be none of that non-profit medicine where we are at, don't you think?
