I don't have enough saved to count as a "retirement fund" but I'm working on that. I don't count on receiving SS when I retire.

No I don't consider SS as part of my retirement. I have not paid into SS through most of my work life. The 35 quarters (or whatever its called) I consider it a donation to SS. Even if I worked for x years to qualify I most likely would only get the minimum.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the original intent of SS was to be a supplement to ones retirement and not "the" retirement plan.

Im 64, retired and comfortable...Im not inclined to tell people what i have or how much...but im quite comfortable...I would like to add when i came home from the military...as a cop i was making a whopping 5700.00 a year....public workers for decades made peanuts...its a recent phenomena that they make what they make.
Id like to see harry guerilla save 10k in 3 yrs on 5700 a year.....and one more thing harry...in 35 yrs the way this is going 10 grand every 3 yrs might land you in the gutter in your old age....I thought I was saving quite a bit too....

Well I'm just starting out, however, it came at great expense from a life changing event.
I work at a factory, I make about $12.50 an hour and support 4 people (myself included), plus I'm in the middle of buying a house.
Not on public assistance, in any way.

I've worked my ass off to get where I am, thus far.
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.

i meant how much in general, clearly. i gave some broad categories for both age and wealth.

Wow, you Americans operate on different time scales to us. I am 17, and I will be leaving school next year, and I will be able to vote when I am 18. How come you will not be finished school until you are 23? Or do you mean university or college? And you can't vote until you are 21 - unreal!

As for my worth, I have a savings account in the UK with about £25 in it, and I have an ipod, a laptop, and a skateboard, worth a total of perhaps £200. So I'm quite a catch if any of you chicks are interested.
