Who is your guy? I could Google it, but I'm lazy.

Maybe it was this guy...

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better"

Peoples perspectives become relevant and informed and oh so right...based on the letter behind the politicians name. Talk about stupid assed...

Wasn't it Obama that said that? Before he was POTUS?

Who is your guy? I could Google it, but I'm lazy.

He was the president of the screen actors guild, and a spokesman for General Electric, if you don't know who I'm talking about, your not a Republican :2razz:

Don't get me wrong BD, I'm actually glad he owned up to it. But you've got to wonder if he wasn't making what he called "a political vote" here. Granted its not exactly a vote here but it is similar. Election season is just around the corner after all.

So he admits that he was willing to harm the country for no reason outside of pursueing his politics but we support him anyway?

One more time. He says that he was willing to harm the standing of the United States in the name of partisan politics.

Sometimes you have to dig a hole to prevent something worse from happening. The potential for something worse in this case is large. Further, both sides agree that something needs to be done about the deficit and now is the time to do it. The disagreement is over how to do it, and neither side is working to find compromise, though Obama has offered just about everything republicans could ask for, all they have to do is have the courage to vote for it.

Show of hands, anyone that thinks they will actually do something with the deficit. Nah...I didnt think so. They will continue this tit for tat to show the Americans how the 'real' leader is. They will haggle for months and come up a few millions saving less that what thewy currently spend. The debt will continue to grow.

Im one of the ones that say impose tax increases AND spending cuts. If we are going to anything at all things wil have to change. When they celebrate a few pathetic cuts to the amount OVER the budget they are going to spend they hail this as a success. They dont take it seriously. They havent. They wont.

I dont believe the republicans are anymore serious than the democrats. I think the republicans are maintaining a hard line because the Tea Party contingent demonstrated last year that they are willing to work to oust republicans that spend like crackwhores before the even worry about the democrats that do the same. Neither party has demonstrated anything resembling fiscal sense.

There would be some I am sure, however, a majority is quite a stretch. Remember, in 2007, democrats voted 26 to 21 in the senate in favor of raising the debt ceiling, under Bush.

And how many here would be logical...reasoned rational...and how many would just engage in the typical kneejerk response? Both sides here have that knack. I dint think a majority is beyond anyones stretvj of the imagination.

They have to give up on the tax increase thing, seriously. Closing loopholes is bad to them? Really, it makes no sense.

when you do that, you raise effective rates.

consider, for example, a low-income working family on one income with three kids. take away their EITC and Child-Tax-Credit, and you have just significantly increased the burden of government on them.

It is hard to support something when you have no idea what you are being asked to support. To make the arguement that surely we can all agree to close loopholes, sounds great until you realize you have no idea what these loopholes are that we are to close.

You haven't been following the story, have you? Otherwise, you'd know that Obama offered so much, he scared his own party. They still said no.

this is incorrect. Obama and Boehner had a deal and Democrats blew up over it. So Obama was forced to try to change it at the last minute to suit them, and that is what Boehner said no too. Boehner was going to give Obama $800 Bn in revenue.... and the Senate Democrats made Obama demand more.

hence the point of my "big deal not possible" thread. the minimum amount of taxation the democrats are willing to accept is higher than the maximum the republicans are willing to accept.

Now this post cracked me up....like you really want us to believe thats the loophole that the teaparty is opposed to.....please man lol

I'm reading everything I can, trying to figure out why all the Republicans are answering to Grover Norquist. I Don't Get It.

They live in ignorance and fear.
Much like sheep... but for them, its natural..but not for man.

Is this the 3rd or 4th end of the world drop dead sky is falling earth will end if we don't do this date since Obama's reign of terror began, I can't recall. "Never let a crisis go to waste". Where was the panic when Dem's didn't pass any budget at all when they were up to bat?

Seeing your previous posts and my past experiences with you: WTF?

Anything that grants a tax break or credit for any body could be rightfully referred to as a "loophole".

I guarantee you...like...rock solid...all your dreams come true if Im wrong (but no way I am) guarantee...if this was president McCain banging the drum for a debt ceiling increase the majority of liberals today supporting raising the debt ceiling here would be opposed to it. When people ask "where do you get the idea" the answer is obvious...they get it from the spin doctors that spoon feed them what they know they want to hear.

I am totally opposed to raising the debt ceiling. Its exactly the opposite of what should be done. We should be targeting massive cuts AND tax increases. The debt ceiling should remain intact. Yes...it might sting. Its going to sting. Decades of fiscal stupidity and voter enabling is going to require some real pain to change. There is still ample resources to pay interest, medicaid, social security, and defense. EVERYTHING else should be on the block starting with congressional budgets, foreign aid, every non-critical expense.

i hear raising taxs wont be good for us

And they'd be wrong. Raising the debt ceiling is the right thing, we don't need to sacrifice our way of life for a rash way out of our debt problem. This will be a long process solving the debt, we can't do it over night. We shouldn't try to, it would be irresponsible.

you rather sacrafice your grandkids future/

Explain how not paying your bills is an okay thing? We've already spent this money, and with a deal that cuts spending, and raises revenue in a practical fashion will get us out of this problem. No need to burn the whole thing down, we have to take a calm measured approach, an approach that isn't very sexy, but one that works.

Nothing is burning down. This is just the same as it if was a persons family and home. No bank in the world will lend to a bad credit risk (with the U.S. currently is), so the family in this case has to pick and choose which creditors will be paid and which ones will not. Of those that will not, a discussion on future payments and negotiations on a lower payment or extended time frame of those payments possibly with a higher interest rate. See... Obama voted against the debt ceiling and now he's leading the charge to raise it. What doesn't make sense is his position - he seemed to have flip-flopped, however I agree with his position when he was in the Senate. It's irresponsible for us to continue to raise the debt ceiling. We need to keep it where it is, pay our bills and negotiate the others ... the thought that some cataclysm will occur Aug 2nd is fiction.
