years or more in prison.

2-3 years in prison

1-2 years in prison

a year or less in jail

severe fines

lenient fines

permanently banned from journalism

community service

nothing

other/I do not know

This is a multiple choice and users can see who voted.

I believe they should be severely punished. Its bad enough with the government does this sort of **** but private individuals/entities/companies should be banned from invading the privacy of citizens. Generally I think think anti-stalking laws should apply to journalist just as it does to crazy fans and exes. I think severe fines, ten year prison sentence and community service should suffice.

jail is a waste of money

a pubic caning would work well in such a situation

3+ years, severe fine and banned from practising journalism. Tabloid journalists piss me off to no end, the sentence should be lessened if they revealed real news.

Praise be to Allah, your punishment is just and wise.

May your many wives bear you three score male children and may your camels reproduce plentifully so you may sell their offspring and become even wealthier!!

I beating is quick and over with real soon. This might be good for smaller offenses, but I think something major like this should be long lasting.

we could brand them-that lasts longer

its a waste putting them in jail-jail should be reserved for people who have to be physically incapacitated to keep society safe

Jail would keep society's privacy safe from journalists.

then the tabloids would be filled with "I WAS A CELL BLOCK PRISON BITCH" or "I WAS GANG BANGED BY A GANG BANGER"

That would be funny and perhaps it would send a message to other journalists to not **** with the privacy of their fellow citizens.

yeah true. I always saw journalists as being somewhat a-retentative and that might change things a bit

whatever they do to non-journalists

What kind of punishments does a non-journalist receive for hacking or wiretapping a phone?

they get suspended and their boss takes their gun and badge until the arbitrator makes his ruling

I agreed with the 3+ years and severe fine. I'm not for the banning.

I don't know if you can "ban" them from journalism or not. But I would say at least 3 years in prison (we give out much longer sentences for less), severe fines, community service...lots of it.

I wouldn't know where to begin or how to place judgement on this. I will say this no one and I mean no one is above the law that the citizenry supports and or voted on etc. So if this journalist goes before a court and is judged and convicted by his peers, then let the judge decide and whatever he decides I am good with.

That is what we shall all have to do. But the question posed by the thread is "what should happen", and for that we are allowed to theorize.

I suppose your right and therefor I will abstain...no I won't 3 years prison but suspended, 50,000 dollar fine, I believe this is the law for violating the privacy act, it could have been 5 years and 250,000. The 50,000 dollar fine could be reduced in exchange for community service such instructional classes to future journalist. All this said, I also would allow civil suits to be brought forth for any personal injury to others this may have caused but with limits.

The max the Law will allow.

How hard is that?

As retired Reporter and Politician even I have standards, but then I'm old school, from a time when integrity, and honesty meant more than anything else.

Doesn't seem like much of a punishment.

They should be held accountable just like any/every other citizen - per the state/federal law. No more, no less.
