The House vote on the Cut, Cap and Balance bill is deemed "bi-partisan". Is it?

I voted just one. Because that's all you need to spin it as such.

When you have to worry is when one party can pass a bill with no support from the other side. Much like the house healthcare bill. That is partisan politics.

I pick a purely arbitrary 10 %. If you can get 10 % of the other party to support your bill, it can be considered bipartisan.

Note that this is purely an arbitrary number chosen by putting almost a whole seconds thought into it.

The answer depends on how much spin one wishes to apply to it.

Thats a good question and I put I dont know...I guess ideally it would be 50/50 but we know that wont happen

All you need is one to be able to spin it as such.

For me personally though, I need between a fifth and a fourth of the other party voting for it for me to truly buy it as honestly "bi-partisan". My general feeling:

0-1% of the opposite party voting for it = Party Lines, partisan bill
2%-20% = non-party line, mildly partisan bill
21-50% = Bi-partisan bill
50% 0 100% = Non-partisan bill

That's my rough view on it

libs used to claim if they got RINOS Snowe and Collins to vote with all the other dems that was a bipartisan bill

I agree with the 21-50%. It seems like less the majority party suckered the opposing party with personal deals and that ain't real bi-partisan behavior. That said though, just because a bunch of Dems and Reps voted for it doesn't mean it's good. Bi-partisan bills aren't necessarily any better for the country then partisan bills.

true enough sometimes all that is left is the stuff that seduces those on each side and the tough stuff needing to be passed is scrapped

Because of all the various factions, southern and northern, and accusations of RINOs and DINOs, that can be easily achieved with the right legislation.

wouldnt 51% be turning the table?

If it's a democrat sponsored bill, it needs 1 republican vote to support it to be bipartisan. If it's a republican sponsored bill, it's partisan regardless. Well, I'm just repeating what I keep hearing in the news... ;)

It's all spin. There hasn't been a truly bi-partisan bill in as long as I can remember.

The war in Iraq and the Patriot Act were overwhelming supported by both parties.

Bipartisan? Well, sort of.
A pile of grandstanding manure? Yes, that it most certainly is.

The bill would cut total spending by $111 billion in FY 2012 and caps total federal spending by creating a “glide path” that limits spending at 22.5 percent of GDP next year

This is meaningless even if it should somehow pass. $111 billion out of a total budget of nearly four trillion? out of a deficit of a trillion and a half? That isn't even 10% of the deficit. and, then we're going to try to pass that elusive balanced budget amendment that's been bandied about for at least a decade now, with no concrete results?

Further, it has a snowball's chance of passing the Senate.

and, if it should somehow survive the Senate, the POTUS has threatened to veto it anyway. It's dead in the water, and everyone knows it. So, why make a big deal about it?

so the supporters can run campaign ads telling the voters how fiscally conservative they are, of course.

Politicians used to like to stand on a soapbox. Now, they seem to be standing on a huge pile of manure.

Whenever both parties want something like NAFTA they pick and choose who will vote for it on each side by who is safe for relection in thier districts...those that arent safe get to vote no so they can go home and rant...SEE HOW I PROTECTED YOU...blah they are all full of chit
