Well, since the republicans said no to $3 cut for every $1 in tax increases - I don't know that your question matters. They're stuck, well and truly.
Out of curiosity, what would people consider a reasonable compromise? For simplicity, lets look at it from an abstract level. Would you be satisfied with 1 dollar of increases tax revenue for 1 dollar of spending? If not, what what ration would you consider acceptable?
the issue is spending
each side has to cut stuff it wants
No tax increases of any kind. Debt ceiling reduced, not even maintained, and forget about raising it ever again.
Democrat party disbanded. Liberals institutionalized.
Go troll somewhere else Jerry, I actually want to see what people feel on this matter.

So you oppose any plan with tax increases, no matter what the ratio?
Taxes are high enough. It's time to now increase tax revenue by lowering the tax rate
beginning with the repeal of ObanaCare. If ObamaCare is off the table, then imo we should let the US go into default.
So you criticize my hypothetical compromise for being lopsided, and then you propose that the Republicans cave on something they've stated they want (Not to raise the debt limit) in exchange for....nothing? Or at most, in exchange for cuts the Democratic Vice President's group suggested. So you complain mine is lopsided and then push one that is Republicans compromising in exchange for ...... nothing?
Obamacare doesn't come into full effect until 2014. What is so urgent about repealing it that you are willing to make the U.S. default? Wouldn't it be far less devastating to the nation to repeal it after the 2012 elections?
It needs to be repealed before the elections so that Obama is removed from office the Democrat party in general looses power in Congress. McCain was at least easier to control.
If the republicans don't increase the debt ceiling, they will get blamed for consequences of defaulting and get slaughtered in 2012. Your strategy does the opposite of what you want.
I won't cry if/when they do. I'm not on their team. McCain is a RINO, not a real Republican, but as you may see if you correctly read my post, I was not supporting him because of his party, but of how much easier it would be to control.
I'm not concerned with anyone getting blamed for the debt ceiling, they were wrong to establish it in the first place. We keep moving the ceiling, so it's not actually a ceiling, but a comfort zone. We will in fact borrow as much as we damn well want. As a nation we have no discipline.
I like how Obama is still threatening social security and military pay while sitting on that unspent TARP money.
You just said you wanted the democrats out of power. Regardless of your distaste for the republicans, they are your only other option.
While Obama may be scaremongering for all he is worth, he isn't wrong. If he has to cut 43% of the budget, TARP money is a drop and bucket and cuts will have to be made to defense and SS.
liblady;1059653484]i agree with a balanced budget amendment. i agree with no tax increases if we don't balance the budget. but you know what will happen if we balance the budget solely with spending cuts? what do you think our "austerity budget" would look like? crime would increase, police departments would decrease staff. education would suffer, infrastructure would suffer, other taxes would be raised, at the state as well aas the federal level. new fees would be developed. i would much rather have an honest increase on the wealthy than a back door increase for everyone.

Indeed - eliminating the ability to borrow to cover spending will destroy the Dems.No tax increases of any kind. Debt ceiling reduced, not even maintained, and forget about raising it ever again.

Republicans are already in the deep serious for their obvious refusal to bring anything to the table.
The republicans are not united on the matter. McConnel and Boehner are willing to deal. If they can overcome the fanatical idiots, they have an opportunity to take a real chunk out of the deficit.
