I had planned on going to the BWCA in northern Minnesota next week for some fishing.

the problem is, with the state shut down, they have decided that the issuing of licenses is non-essential, while enforcement of licenses remains essential. (to make them look irreplaceable IMO)

So would you:

1 cancel the trip
2 go anyway. don't fish, but enjoy the wilderness
3 screw them. fish illegally and if fined, ignore it/fight it
4 screw them. fish illegally and if fined, pay it.

but if you must go don't fish.

I'd say 4. What are the chances you'll get caught? And the fine isn't even that heavy. If you go illegally, though, be prepared to face the consequences. Better assuming you're paying the fine and being pleasantly surprised, after all.

Go and have fun without the fishing. If while there you get a "vibe" that you will be cool/ok to fish? Risk it. If not? Don't. Have fun dude:cool:

Does these kind of laws actually stop anyone from fishing in the first place?

I say go fishing.

Do not fish without a license. Especially if you're from out of state. The game warden can confiscate all of your prized tackle, as well as giving you a large fine. Change destinations.

Is it just a fine? How large? If they ain't gonna take any of your stuff (which government likes to do), and it's just a bit of a fine; I would probably take the chance. Then come election, I'd vote against all the incumbents.

Alter plans and still go fishing...just go somewhere else. Bad kharma getting caught without a license...especially when the state is already in turmoil.

Why don't you just fish on the Canadian side? You can only keep what you eat and can't bring it back to the states. Also, can you not get a license from the local stores? I'd call a bait shop or sporting goods store. They might still be able to issue licenses.

Quetico on the Canadian side limits permits so severely that you need to make plans 4-6 months in advance. It is not possible to obtain a fishing license. Some outfitters are taking it upon themselves to take your money and issue there own license with intent to give the money to the state when the license system is online.

It is being reported in the news that the DNR are not hassling people about the license, but honestly, I would go anyway. I really only obey laws I personally agree with, and requiring a license while not offering a license is a law I would never agree to.

these are the times when anarchists should really be out preaching.

the state claims they have a budget problem..

so they

1) pay to host a website explaining why they won't take your license revenue

2) shut down the website that takes license revenue

3) employ people to enforce laws, so they continue running the expense side, but not the revenue side

in truth, this has nothing to do with a government shut down. This is a political ploy to cause as much grief for people as possible, then both political parties hope they are the ones that benefit due to the people blaming the other party for the pain.
