I wouldn't count out the first half of Jedi, either. It's the one time we really get to see what a Jedi can do. No cgi, limited use of wires... Mark Hamil swordfights like a real person, unlike everyone in the prequels. And his flips are physically possible (at least mostly), unlike the folks in the prequels who can jump 30 straight up. Return of the Jedi's real showcase is, after two full movies, showing us what it really means to be a Jedi, spiritually and physically. It's badass.

This is absolutely true. Natalie Portman, and even Haydn Christensen are capable of portraying love stories. They've done it plenty of times in other films. Anakin acts like a whiny little bitch because that's the way Lucas wrote it. Hell, consider Samuel L. Jackson! The man is made of awesome. Yet why does Mace Windu only seem... kinda cool?

There you go! Ewoks. They so spoiled it for me, every scene in which they appear, I haven't watched the film beyond the point where they show up, in years. I it's just mind numbing to me.

It's not that I don't like Star Wars at all. I do and was a huge fan of the first film and Revenge. Lucas' story telling, it is not in the same league as LOTR.

There are 9 Star Wars stories. Lucas made 4-6 in the 70's and 80's and then he came back and made 1-3 in the late 90's.

I have to toss in the Alien and Terminator Series into the fray. Terminator 3 was kinda lame, but the other three rival LOTR and Star Wars any day of the week. The first two Aliens were epic as well. Rocky 1 and 6 were good too, it is just that damn two decades in between.

My favorite Trilogy is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, STIII: The Search for Spock, and STIV: The Voyage Home.

LORD OF THE RINGS - they are actually excellent films on many levels. SW was a fun saturday matinee movie - EMPIRE was the best of the bunch - and JEDI was an offensive pandering to kiddies to sell merchandise.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

Re: Lord of the Rings Trilogy or Star Wars Original Trilogy?

Now, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and a huge Lord of the Rings fan. Both are the definition of epic, in their own ways. It often comes down to what mood I'm in, to decide which I like better. LOTR has some of the most epic fight scenes and characters we will ever see, and Star Wars has some of the most amazing concepts and plots twists ever. Right now, though, I just watched the truly epic charges and fight scenes, so I'm going to flip a coin and go with LotR.
