Sounds like an apples vs oranges kind of thing to me. Having said that, if you were to ask me which I'd rather sit down and watch right now, I'd probably go with LotR for the simple reason that I've seen the Star Wars trilogy so many times I now find it somewhat hard to watch.
Star Wars is like my favorite thing ever, although the prequels were retarded.
It's tough to say. LotR books are the top dog, hands down. And without those books, the quintessential popular adventure epic, maybe Star Wars would never have been made. And without Star Wars proving that a special effects-filled adventure epic movie could work, there would probably never have been LotR movies. They're very intertwined.
Consider Luke vs. Frodo. Luke is the perfect prototypical hero. He's fantastic for his narrative role because we get to see him grow up, attain power, and confront evil. Frodo is completely not the prototypical hero. He's you and me, forced into an impossible position. Frodo is fantastic for his narrative role because he is completely unable to compete with the evil he is faced with, and endures, despite the pain and suffering he is forced to go through.
I'm avoiding voting because I really can't choose. I could go on forever...
I am going to agree with the anti-prequel segment of this thread, though. The sticking in of old characters, shoving so much into each frame to create such cluttered visuals, the whiny and childish portrayal of Anakin... The prequels are incredibly juvenile compared to the originals.
