Suggestion on getting the debt ceiling raised....(read post)

From what I understand the majority of Republicans don't want to raise the debt ceiling because they know that we need to start making huge cuts in spending. So here's my little contribution to the debt ceiling arguement.

When they go to discuss this issue make this suggestion to the republicans. (note i'm going to act like a democrat for this) "If you agree to raise the debt ceiling we promise, and will add the stipulation into the bill for raising the debt ceiling, that we will not make any new spending bills until we have fully addressed making cuts to current spending and implemented those cuts. The cuts will not be below a minimum of 1 trillion dollars."

What do you think of this suggestion?

IMO it would deflate the sails of anyone that is against raising the debt ceiling and it would more than likely even give Democrats a positive image because it would show people that they really are serious about our debt problem. (Seriously...I do wonder if they are serious about it)

...I voted other... in part, because a bird in hand is worth two in the bush... I'm tired of hearing about promises... spending must be cut while no more debt is allowed, which is just more spending later on... we have to plug the leaks... do, or do not... there is no try...

Hence why I added that the promise be made into a stipulation in the bill to raise the debt ceiling itself.

I'm sorry, but I'm not accepting "I promise" from any politician...party identification aside. Show me cuts, I'll raise the debt ceiling. Show me promises and I'm not budging.

As noted, that does not force them to live up to that. Now......Snowe suggested passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. If they did that, then I would consider it.

I am 100% supportive of this idea. It raises the debt ceiling, gives the Republicans a face-saving way to declare victory, while giving them nothing of any meaningful substance. Too bad it would never actually get any Republican support.

take that money out of the wars in the east and the war on drugs here in america, invest it in our economy and that will solve the debt problem. return the tax rate on corporations to what it was before W. end overseas loopholes, where is all this money coming from?

So in essence despite there being a clause in the bill to raise the debt ceiling stopping them from considering anything else but making cuts (at least until the 1 trillion was met)...you all contend that they would ignore what they made law?

    hmmm.....

well, given that the Republican position is that they are willing to raise the debt ceiling by the same amount as they cut, I would simply want those cuts in the same bill, and I would demand they equal at least a trillion dollars.

but don't tell me about "things you promise to do in the future". Democrats won't even follow the law and come up with a budget. that promise is worth less than the oxygen it took to make it.

to answer your question: no, Democrats are not serious about the debt. Harry Reid's suggestion for raising the debt ceiling was to include another stimulus package.
