Should Congress vote itself a pay cut?

Congress could vote itself a pay cut in support of the American people who are going through such tough times. It would be symbolic because any reasonable pay cut would not free up enough money to put a dent in the deficit. I would suggest a 3% pay cut set to end when unemployment goes below 7%.

I'd doubt this will happen, but if it did, I would feel some respect for Congress.

I say yes. Preferably I think once a year we should get to vote on whether or not to give them a raise,keep their pay the same or decrease it.

Before some retard says"if you do not like the job they are doing then vote them out of office".That is not realistic since the majority of people voting for these scumbags in office do not pay attention to what their elected officials are doing or they got a short attention span for what ever our elected officials are doing.

Absolutely.. There needs to be some measure that we the people can assess against them for their weak and pitiful performance.. If people in the work force acted and performed in the manner that they do.. Unemployment would be much much higher..

They aren't doing anything to help the people and they are acting like a bunch of babies with their pitiful antics and finger pointing.. It is easier to get a room full of first graders to agree on something than it is congress..

Many states have local elections,ballot issues/voter initiatives, Bond issues and so on. So implementing a once a year vote on pay would not be difficult nor would it be going out of the way. As long as only an elected officials constituents are allowed to vote for their elected official's pay raise,decrease or no change in pay it will stay fair.

I'd be cheaper as a whole if congress was paid better so they wouldn't be bribed into giving away 100x their salaries in subsidies, contract and tax exemptions. Its not a matter of what they deserve, but what gets the best results.

Not only that but they need to stop all the perks they get.

I am retired and because the CPI doesn't include important costs we all pay and that is not right by a long shot. I don't get a cost of living raise but the price of every consummer price is jumpimg. How is that fair to anyone?

I think any cuts need to be permanent.

Simple.. Make a law that requires them to report any and all funds recieved from any an all sources.. This money will be taxed at the same rate as their payroll tax.. If it is more than their salary, they lose their salary for that pay cycle.. Their medical plans will be changed to a standard medical insurance plan in which they pay 50% of the premiums.. If their personal net worth is over 1 million dollars.. Then they will no recieve pay or insurance.. They don't need it.. It would be nice to get some poor folks in office.. Someone with some brains..

Buy a member of congress's vote and selling their vote should both be felonies with prison sentences.. No more lobbiests.. They listen the american people and only the american people.. No company or corperation can make campaign contrabutions.. Despite a retarted ruling.. Google is not a person..

Then create a watch dog group to monitor all this and we should be good..

I like this idea, but it'd be good if their paycut reflected upon unemployment levels, unemployment at 10%, their pay goes down by 10%.

That would get Congress doing some VERY stupid things to create jobs.

:shrug: They're politicians, they'll do stupid things anyway, and it may keep penis photos off twitter.

Come on now, do you believe these people are there for the salary? They get enough support from the parties and lobbies.
For the sake of PR they could cut their paychecks but let's get real - a couple of million dollars more or less wouldn't make any difference in this multi trillion deficit game.
