Where there racists in 1776? (read post first)

In the 18th Century. Based on their level of understanding. Was Darwin a racist?

Yes.

Would you call scientists from the 1300s stupid for believing that the world was flat?

I'm not even sure if this is actually true, but if they did, then yes, seeing as the Greeks had figured it out millenia before.

Would you describe any scientist from the 1900s who has been proven to be dead wrong, yet that same persons work and findings enabled others to learn and grow...would you call that person stupid? Why then this simple minded need to associate a label to people from CENTURIES ago with our modern understanding of humanity?

Basically, this whole discussion was sparked by a semantic debate.

If you read any books that people back then wrote, or about people back then, its easy to see that the prevailing view at the time was that blacks were like children. This view was held by the vast majority of people up until the early 20th century. For example, they would hire black porters or servants and say things like "if they (the blacks) were capable of reflection, they could see...."

OK then... one race superior to another. Superior in what? Ethiopian long distance runners are probably the best in the world. Black people are excellent basketball players and have big dicks. White Anglo-Saxons are brilliant architects and engineers. Japanese are precise in engineering (cars, electronics) as much as whites or even better sometimes.

So, it depends on what you value, I guess.

Nah...this thread was started because he wasnt getting the chance to be right in the other thread either. You cannot promote some vacant simple minded notion comparing people today with people 235 years ago and judging them by the very standards we have learned and developed BECAUSE of those people.

You just admitted a few posts ago that you agree with me, so you just accused yourself of having a "vacant simple minded notion". I just wanted to point that out for your ego.

I do NOT agree with you. I have stated since the beginning that SOME people are racist, have been racist and always will be racist. Individuals...bitter angry unhappy little people. There will ALWAYS be racists. 'Society' was not racist then because they engaged in normal and commonly held beliefs. If it was just a question of 'where some people racist' then there would have been no arguments in this or the last thread but that wasnt what you were striving for. You know better.

I must say however it is FASCINATING how you so completely avoid like the plague the reality that there exists this modern practice of slavery and what we must call those people that still practice it today. Good lord...it must suck living in politically correct hell.

Jefferson once said that black women were less human because they could not visibly blush.

Then you agree with me since that's been my only argument.

I think it's more fascinating that you keep bringing up this topic in threads/conversations that have nothing to do with it and then accuse people of avoiding discussing it when in fact they're trying to stick to the topic at hand and not fall into your delusional nonsensical little strawmen. If you care so much about this obviously important slavery topic, start a thread on it.

That comment has been made by numerous people at numerous times. There is a world of difference between yes, some people are, were, and will be racists and "people were racists back in 1776 because they had slaves and some of them believed they were savage." You continue to make the illogical leap that some bad people somehow relates to an era or time. We dont have slavery today...we have a pretty good understanding of the development of mankind...and SOME people are still racist assholes.

hahaha. i love fun facts.

I may have been slightly off. It would have been just blacks in general, I believe. He loved the sight of the blush.

The Founding Generation turned over the design of the Capital City to a black man. There were black voters. George Washington ran his own spy ring during the war, and his top agent was... a black guy; Washington based some pretty heavy plays on him. You don't let someone who you think is inherently stupid design your capital city, you don't put the fate of your country's military in his hands, and you are unlikely to let him vote.

Racism came later.

Racism existed back then, it just wasn't as pronounced as it came to be after the civil war. When you lose, you look to someone else to pick on to make you feel better.

The only thing this comment proves is that you're illiterate since you clearly don't understand anything I've said.

Oh its VERY relevant...you want to associate people in 1776 with racism and you tie attitudes of slavery and humanity into your definition. So...take it outside of your little simple minded and narrow 13 colony box. Are the current slave owners 'racist'? Are they savages? Are the people they hold savages? Does every society throughout history that held slaves (especially of a different race) qualify as racist?

start a new threaaadddddd.

Jefferson once said that black women were less human because they could not visibly blush.

It didn't stop him from fathering children with one, though.

I understand far too well what you have said. You are even more silly if you think your simple minded definitions and descriptions of people and attitudes is hard to understand. You present the discussion equivalent of "daddy...how does a computer work?" with the response "why...its "simple" son...you push this little button right here..."

except you agree with me so you just insulted yourself...again. when will you learn?

Sigh...yes...just stick with...'turn it on.' Dont worry about learning how...or why...and dont worry...there will always be a job for you mowing someones lawn or cooking fries. Or you can always live in the basement.

Indeed, likely not. Genetic proof was not specific enough about *which* Jefferson fathered her children, but likelihood is on that side.
