The Minnesota shutdown, the NBA and the death of compromise - The Fix - The Washington Post

Given those results, it’s perhaps not surprising that the first big post-election legislative showdown — over whether or not to extend the tax cuts put in place by President George W. Bush — devolved into an extended staring match between the White House and the newly ascendant Republican party in Washington.

In a Gallup poll conducted during that tax fight, a majority (51 percent) of Republicans said they preferred that their Members of Congress “hold out for the basic budget plan they want, even if that means the government shuts down”. Just 27 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of independents held that same view in the survey.

It ain't doin too good right now, but people are beginning to get sick of the way things are going right now and the simple fact that we're about a 50/50 country means we won't put up with it indefinitely.

The upcoming elections are going to redefine stupid.

How so, "redefine stupid?"

There are some things you just can't afford to compromise.

... No pun intended :ssst:

Can we start partitioning the country now?

They aren't preserving anything that can last or keep the country strong.

Well ya see, the way most "messaging" works is through uniformity and repetition. So all the talking point nonsense we see here every day is going to be EVERYWHERE, turned up to ELEVEN.

The demand on the part of the people for a return to compromise may not occur until after the elections for this reason.

But the Republican candidates are lightening their tone, and Becks off Fox, so there is hope they'll back off to avoid alienating independents.

Time will tell.

Thanks. I'll probably have to take another DP break, since I'm already up to here with the **** and it's still well over a year away.

Have you really ever seen someone at any of these political rallies that you believe could be a physical threat?

i'm not referring to the staged "rallies", although it's a possibility that certain groups may incite certain outbursts at these as well.

Sorry BD, I wasn't trying to increase your angst. And we would miss you if you weren't around.:2wave:

Thanks. I just feel like - well, I changed my sig to reflect how I'm feeling.

Nowadays, political parties are only interested in beating the other guy. Not doing what's helpful for American. Neither the left's nor the right's extreme views will work on the problems that we encounter today. Yet, both sides still present them... and try to beat the other side over the head with them, vilifying and demonizing.

George Washington was right.

You do know Beck is making his own TV channel right?

I saw some chatter on New Posts, but I thought it was internet and you have to pay or something. His audience is apparenty elated. But he's no longer on Fox every day so he should be marginalized to some degree.

Fox got rid of him because was upsetting independents, imho.

But you gotta hand it to him and his writers. Premium grade "A" bull****.

I say no. However you got to realize that sometimes a compromise is not a compromise if you are not getting anything in return. Lowering the debt for example requires lots of cuts and a change in spending, you do not do that by raising taxes because the only thing tax increases do is give the government more of an excuse to spend more. If you are opposed to illegal immigration then the one you do not do is cave into amnesty because amnesty is like adding more fuel to the fire seeing how it encourages more illegal immigration. If you are pro-2nd amendment then the last thing you do is cave to any restrictions because restrictions further restrict the right and pave the way for more restrictions. If you are against tax increases then any bill calling for tax increases would not be a compromise.

For the short term, I hope compromise is off the table.

The way the extreme right wing ideology has taken over the republican party - I fear the same thing.

If things don't get turned around before the year is out, Marie Antoinette will have nothing on "the party of no."

Patrick Sharma needs to stop spreading fear with ridiculous lies. Its fine to say you find it wrong what is happening, its another thing to say either said wants to end the country in its entirety.

Ridiculous lies? I don't know how old you are, but somebody saying something they believe (which I also believe) that flies in diametric opposition to your beliefs is NOT "spreading fear with ridiculous lies." I'm wearing the sig because I read what I've been feeling ever since the idiots walked out on the budget talks.

Republicans appear ready to throw away over two hundred years of American history for relatively modest tax increases on the wealthiest members of society.

If that isn't a lie then he has no justification to speak on the issue.

so far, it's been the liberal faction in the country committing the acts of vandalism and violence at political functions.
i admit, it would be nice for the conservative movement to finally pull their heads out of their asses and retaliate.
