Mark Halperin Suspended After Calling President Obama a ‘Dick’ on Live TV -- Daily Intel

It was just supposed to be a joke! Kind of! This morning, the Time politics scribe was, as he often is, a guest on the set of MSNBC's Morning Joe, where he discussed President Obama's feisty and combative press conference yesterday. Halperin, perhaps feeling a little feisty himself after being plied with free Starbucks, asked for and received assurances that the Morning Joe crew was on a seven-second delay, at which point he opined that Obama behaved like "kind of a dick yesterday." Unfortunately, the show's producer somehow didn't know how to work the bleep button — um ... you press it, with your finger, right? — and the expletive aired in all its vulgar glory.

Freedom of speech, man. I'm rather stunned he was suspended. It's not like he called him a ****ing ****head. He said he behaved like kind of a dick, which is a huge difference from actually calling him a dick.

I don't think of BO as a dick, so much as a major league asshole.

Big time.

On the other hand, that's not the subject at hand.

It was presumptuous for Halperin to assume the remark would be edited out. He was fired at least because of the **** the network might get from the White House. He may have been fired at the insistence of major advertisers. There's nothing wrong in and of itself with calling the president a dick. Doing it as a broadcast professional has nothing to do with free speech. He was getting paid to talk. He well knew the rules.

Whoa! Wait! He's been fired?

I believe MSNBC would fire him to keep on good terms with the WH - they're that chicken**** - but I thought he was suspended.

I checked the news, still looks suspended to me.

I was alluding to this incident, where W and Mr. Cheney were speaking about a journalist while unaware they were in front of a live mic.

Freedom of speech, man.

I'm curious about this - he's speaking as a paid representative of a company and if he says something that the company/ employer is unhappy about you think his freedom of speech should be unimpaired?

A private citizen saying what he likes about another person is one thing - this is another.

No he should not of.
Free speech brotha!

Orly? Well then, why didn't they just send one of their own talking heads out? Why even hire him, for that matter? It probably had something to do with his quick wit and humor.

I think it is being blown out of proportion and from what I understand it was them testing the waters and their staff out more than anything else, with Joe Scarbrough on the joke. Conservatives of course think it is hilarious and is a bigger issue than it truly is:

It would be hard say the lying bastard isn't an Anthony, or is he a big Richard, because everyone knows Richards invariably turn out to be Dicks.

sounds to me that Mr. Halperin just calls 'em like he sees 'em

Do we have a "better people" ?
I'm positive that every President has been called that and worse - pubicly.
Maybe over national TV is "going too far" ??
So, at this point in time, the censors must go and no-one should be fired.
And, IMO, we do not have a "better people" , this will take time.

I bet if he said George Bush was a dick a few years ago... he wouldn't have been suspended. msnbc liberal bias.

I'm not sure I often wonder that myself I think in general these places try their hardest not to directly insult presidents. MSNBC just seems to be ran by a bunch of assholes in the first place that like to fire and suspend their own people anyways. If they really let bias get in the way, they would have never suspended Keith Olbermann or Ed Schultz.

I don't think he should have been suspended, but the 1st amendment has no place here. Freedom of speech is a contract between the government and the people that they can't shut you up. Of course a network can fire anyone who says something they find objectionable.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

If he was being paid to be an Obama supporter, then they were right to suspend him.

Morning Joe under pressure to invite more Obama supporters as guests | The Right Scoop

Since they were not shills for Bush it's perfectly ok for them to have guests who call Bush a liar and and a murderer.

When you get Emails and talking points directly from the WH, you better not have a person on who calls the president a Dick.

After you suspend the one calling Obama a dick, it's perfectly ok to run a clip about incest concerning the GOP frontrunner, the very next day.

We should all get our news from MSNBC. We would then know we are getting the news the government wants us to get and nothing more. Why clutter up our minds with differing opinions?
