You do know there used to be a time when people worked as many as 80 hours a week and the idea of a 40 hour week was considered "utopian". Then unions and the government got involved, women took a greater role in the work force, and here we are. The fact is technology has increased our productivity so much that it has become pretty common for workers to do about 2 hours of real work in an 8 hour work day.

I would say that political extremism between US factions (i.e, Democrats and Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives) is certainly more charged and potent today than it was twenty years ago. However, Americans were still all aflustre freaking out about the Commies coming to kill them 20 years ago, which was another form of political extremism (see: McCarthyism), and so I think the total level of extremism has not changed.

I'd say true. One of the biggest factors that I think has made extremism worse, though, is the fact that both parties are accusing one another of being the extremists. As this occurs, both parties become further and further separated.

I honestly dont think its the US voting population that is quite extreme.... I think most of us are right along the middle somewhere. I do think however that our representatives that we elect are very extreme in their opinions and beliefs.

There really aren't any ultraliberals in Congress. There are a few congressmen who actually are liberals, but none of them are particularly extreme. The only extremism in Congress is on the right.

Very true. In all the decades I've been an adult, this nation is the most politically polarized, venomous and divisive I've ever seen. Mind you, I wasn't an adult during the McCarthy era, so possibly things were worse back then. But this is the worst I've personally ever seen. And it's not just among politicians. I've never seen everyday citizens literally dispising each other for no other reason than which political party they belong to. (Again, excluding the 50's, which I personally didn't observe.)

20 years ago the economy was kicking ass. People are not so divided when their 401k is doubling every 5 years.
