In theory, a Constitionally limited democratic republic.

Specifically, a Republic where government powers are limited through Constitutional means, and where the governing representatives are elected in a democratic manner.

In practice we're not far from an Oligarchy, in that the real movers-and-shakers are an elite club that's hard to get into, and a plutocracy where those with the money dominate the political scene.

I don't think this could have been put better.

Who are they and how so? If you mean politically maybe... but in the private sector? Most wealth is new money.

I said that it was a Republic. Unfortunately, I cannot call it what is supposed to be... a constitutionally limited democratic republic. It hasn't been that in my lifetime.

An oligarchical constitutionally limited democratic republic.

It is a system where a large portion of the citizen voters are so lazy in their exercise of voter franchise that they allow the elite, through their use of money, to decide that a narrow field of approved candidates shall rule.
You can never be safe from a government that can keep you completely safe from each other and the world. You must choose.

    Bourgeois democracy
