Here's a question someone asked me today that I thought was pretty cool.

If you could be granted complete enlightenment but you would have to die 5 seconds later, would you accept?

If you don't know much about what enlightenment might look like, or you just don't care, then this poll might not matter much to you.

And for the semantic types who are going to ask me to define enlightenment, I can't really define it completely because I'm not enlightened. It might look like some figures from history though, like the Buddha, Jesus, etc. One might call enlightenment full attainment of spiritual awareness and knowledge, and thus complete freedom.

Generally, no, I wouldn't, but there is one exception.

I would defintiely accept that proposal if I was already going to die in five seconds or less. Especially if it was less.

Not just now, I've still got things to do.

Ask me again when I'm 75, I might have a different answer.

Nah...Ive already seen 'the big picture' and 'the thing'...I cant imagine 'complete enlightenment' is going to live up to the hype...

Seriously...we are going to get complete enlightenment when we die. One way or the other.

No because after I get enlightenment I'd have to spend the rest of my life in complete boredom.

No. Enlightenment is a goal but it is the journey to the goal which is important. Besides, enlightenment comes after your physical body dies anyways. Or so I believe.

That sounds like a crappy trade. What good is enlightenment if you are going to be dead five seconds later? It would be like winning a 100 million dollar lottery and you are a 110 years old and going to die before you can even collect a lump sum.

There is no definition for the enlightment here. The 'enlightment' might as well as be the truth of whether Kim-Jong-Il is actually mentally ill or not, or whether Osama Bin Laden was gay or not. If the 'enlightment' were these petty little facts and theories, then I certainly wouldn't want to die 5 seconds after I learned them. Now, if I actually get the meaning of 'enlightment', then maybe I can make a choice.

As much as I hate to use a cliché, but 1/2 been there. In 1984 I had an NDE and OBE that lasted about 4 minutes and although I didn't gain complete enlightenment, I did come away with a renewed sense of a greater power beyond what we see here and now.

I also went from a type A personality, to a type L Laid back. I'm still always "looking for a better way" or building a "better mouse trap"only now I won't tell at you for screwing up my schedule or nor paying attention.

I also became much more spiritual

Yes, I would! I'm about done here anyway.

No point in enlightenment if you can't share it.

Only reason I'd accept was if I wanted to die anyway. Anything that kills you in under five seconds can't be all bad.

Absolutely. I could spend the rest of my life and never be fully enlightened.

Why not just have it all now? Death would be completely worth it. In fact, my enlightenment would probably eliminate any fear of death because I'd know exactly what death was.

One of the most interesting questions I have had posed to me in a long time. I thank you for that. :)

My answer is no, because upon dying I would cause harm to those who love me, and I would end my journey to make the world a better place prematurely.

It wouldn't though, because you couldn't spend the 100 million dollars in that time frame, while, presumably, with complete enlightenment, you could enjoy those 5 seconds.

Assuming the following:

Said enlightenment is instantaneous.

Said enlightenment fits the definition I’m thinking of, which would basically mean I would know and understand everything, like God is supposed to (assuming the existence of God, here).

Said death is painless.

Then my answer is: No.

I would rather search for enlightenment than have it and die in 5 seconds.

And besides, 5 seconds is way too short a period to get much of anything done.

Perhaps blurt out the cure for cancer.

Key theories for an infinite power source that uses no fuel.

Minor stuff like that.

Still no.

No, I most definitely would not accept. I want to get there on my own, in my own time, in this life or the next, or the one after that. I'm really not in any rush.

If you are going to die before you can collect then winning a hundred millions dollar lottery would be pointless. I could be wrong but a lot of states do not let you leave your winnings in a will. Besides that if you take a lump sump instead of payments it is going to be significantly less especially after the government robs half of it in taxes.

Ivoted yes with this type of thinking. Would change my vote otherwise.

I wouldn't take enlightenment if I had 5 years to live. Ignorance is truly bliss.

Is five seconds really enough time to really think and reflect about your enlightenment?

Enlightenment is overrated.
