Would you defend your country?

What would you do?

That alliance you mentioned doesn't even support the rights listed in our Bill of Rights, and includes numerous other "rights" that I am sure both you and I would be opposed to. With the exception of the Canadians, I wouldn't trust any of them to provide a governmental structure that is in line with our cultural values and way of life. They're fine allies and I like them personally, but I would rather burn the entire goddamned country down than allow them to rule it.

Well, you're not wrong. Compared to China, Russia, Saudi, and most of the rest of the world, we're practically family (ie Brit/Aussie/etc), but we do have some quite substantive differences in governing philosophy...which on the practical level would be a problem.

Well if we are doing something horrible like voting Palin in for president..... then Im surrendering!

Even if you said surrender as joke because of the Girlyboy Bieber thing you should be ashamed.

If my country turned into an oppressive dictatorship, committing genocide around the world, then I would pick up arms and join the revolution (because believe me, there would be a revolution). If the rebels had external allies, as the French came to our aid in the first Revolutionary War, then I would fight at their side. If, however, the French or anyone else decided they were going to invade our lands and take over our government by force for themselves, I'd shoot them in a heartbeat.

My answer is; 'No.'

I reject the idea of nationalism as infantile nonsense, therefore, I would never fight purely for a misguided fictional concept. I would, however, fight to defend my rights, and the rights of others.

Say your country had embraced an ideology that was disliked by the majority of the world, and was committing practices that were deemed bad (genocide, environmental damage, listening to Justin Bieber etc.) would you allow a foreign country to invade, or would you fight against the invasion?

No offense, but there are so many nuances to this question that I don't feel it is appropriate for me to answer it.

If the country started mass-murdering citizens, I would fight against my own government.

I would fight for several reasons.
1.) Being anti imperialist i believe we can handle this ourselves.
2.) This is my country i know what is best for it stay out of our wars.

I'm not sure I am reading the poll correctly...

It seems from the OP, that saying FIGHT in the poll would mean you'd fight against the invasion... meaning you'd be supporting your country for practices that were deemed bad (genocide, environmental damage, listening to Justin Bieber etc.

Am I reading that wrong???

According to many - we already do.

So if we were to respond to any such activity or accusation of activity there'd have to be some serious evidence, it would have to get pretty disasterous.

"Would you DEFEND your country?"

I would defend from invasion, not media generated, boogie man threats. I think the Iraq and Libyan invasions are an atrocity committed by us. I am a veteran and a patriot, but not a blind patriot. I went to Vietnam a blind patriot and returned realizing that you help noone by bringing war and death to a country. Corporatism is ruining our country and I'm not so sure we are a democracy when the candidates are supported by Corporate money machines.

Hell, I forbid rounding people up and putting them in camps.

I would go for the first train. Free the ones "they" were most worried about.:mrgreen:k

With our own court systems ordering prison system to let go of who earned their place behind bars - I think we don't hav eto worry about the potential of them actually spending MORE money to incarerate MORE people.

Even in my state: year after year people vote down a tax-increase to cover the cost of additional prisons which results in countless criminals walking away or being set loose again.

My sense of right and wrong goes beyond nationalistic loyalties. I'm inclined to not fight on behalf of the state's ideology. My family matters more to me, so you'd be more likely to see me inside of my fortified home killing anyone who tries to bust in and threaten my son.

In reality though, I would probably just leave the U.S. since I have the material ability to do so.

They could build camps pretty quick if they wanted.

Hell, there's already weird, empty, double fence "camps" in the US that the conspiracy guys trip on. A friends paranoid dad turned me onto them before it became a national conspiracy theory. They were building one on his way to work. Its there, manned but empty.

I personally suspect its CDC. Quarantine facilities for the inevitable outbreak of some pathogen.
