Would yo prefer the design of an old American 50-60's car or the contemporary American car?
Let me underline, this thread is about design, not efficiency and safety.
Please share your thoughts. :usflag2:

**** was way more badass looking back then. I also prefer we all wear suits and ties again too.

Cars from the 50's and 60's had soul...personality. Their look was unique. Modern vehicles (for the most part) look almost interchangeable. Blech.

I take your point about safety but good design goes hand in hand with good safety. That said, American car design like the ones below are just stunning pieces or road art.

I like the new Corvette Stingray though - not sure it will do well outside America as it will need more than just looks to compete.

No questions, OLD!

GM cars in the 60s generally had the best style of any US cars.

GM is now regaining some high quality styling with the Corvette, the new Caddies (CTS's)

Ford in the 60 not so much, it had a few good designs (Mustang, Torino's) but not much else

Mopar had the Challenger and Charger back then, but most others were rather bland. Today outside of the 300 and Challenger its designs are rather bland

I dont like the 50s designs, nor thee 70-80's of the vast majority of US cars

Im old and Ive owned lots of old cars....new cars are better built, better designed, more comfortable, less maintenance, cost less to maintain, break alot less. Newer cars are all around better EXCEPT....they are not faster for the most part.

Huge fan of cars of the 50s like this one I drove in high school.

59 Dodge D-500 Custom Royal Lancer, 383 two 4-barrels, 345 HP
Best car I ever drove

The first car I bought when I was almost 16 for $125. !954 Ford Two Door sedan

With a few exceptions, American cars from the 50 and 60's were bloated whales. They handled about as well as an aircraft carrier. Vinyl and chrome styling isn't exactly pleasing to the eye either.

Speaking on the exterior, the older cars probably have a bit of an edge. Especially during the 60's when things started to become designed aerodynamically, and sports cars began to look like fighter planes with wheels (aesthetically anyway). There are quite a few extremely nice looking modern cars too though.

Speaking on the interiors, modern cars have them beat hands down. I'm not a fan of vinyl.

Cars today (2011) are generally faster then their counterparts in the 50-early 70s. Definately much faster then most of their counter parts in the 90s and early 2000's ( Nissan 300 ZX, Mazda RX7 being noticable exceptions)

You can by 4 door family sedans today with V6 engines that can do 0-60 in around 6 seconds (Nissan Altima, Maxima, Accord) while the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS time is 0-60 mph 7.9 according to

Chevrolet 0-60 Times & Chevrolet Quarter Mile Times | Chevy Chevelle SS, Corvette ZO6 0-60, Cobalt, New Camaro 0-60, Blazer and Chevy Monte Carlo 0 to 60 stats!

Only cars like the Insight, Smart and Prius are generally slower, but they dont have real counterparts (Vega, Pinto, Maverick possible exceptions)

Love the older designs, not to mention that variety of color back then was far greater than it is today. It seems to me that must cars today are silver, white, black, flat maroon, grey or flat green.

Now this would be nice to see on a sells floor.

I just bought the car in the pictures here

Bright Yellow was not exactly my first choice, but it certainly gets attention

The old stuff not only has more class, more curves and more personality - it's just badass.

Old cars just don't look appealing to me. The new ones just look better/run more smoothly.

Is it any wonder ?
All of the world-wide manufacturers use the same styling studio - somewhere in California...
Now, today, motor vehicles are appliances, and must be bland and obediant...and very reliable and durable..

Old cars just don't look appealing to me. The new ones just look better A '39 Buick or a '59 Chev. Impala , or a '40s Lincoln Continental...I'd love having my old '32 Chevy....back then they had a Confederate model (try that today !) and so many others, both the music and styling were far better in "my day"/run more smoothly....Absolutely true, but then the engineers have been working on the (NHV) for over 100 years).
Nothing today is nearly as stylish as the '53 Studebaker...RIP...

We can't forget this classic lol.
