Can you walk away from a discussion that's going nowhere?

Sometimes it's like the freakin energizer bunny brigade of being right and having the last word, here at DP. Where do you fall on the spectrum? Can you go to bed, even if somebody is wrong on the internet? Can you walk away from the conversation, knowing somebody thinks you're wrong?

Oh, let me guess. You didn't even know it was an option.

    Okay, let's have a poll.

It is my official job to point out who is wrong on the internet. If I walked away I would be abandoning my job.

That's just code for "I have a huge ego so it is impossible for me to walk away."

Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

    Okay, let's have a poll.
I think it depends what mood I'm in. I haven't gotten into too many on-and-on discourses on DP. Only then on things I'm passionate about. It's just happened a couple of times though. I remember when I first joined, honest to God!!! true, I saw two posters posting "I did not say that." and "Yes, you certainly did," or something similar between them for three or four pages!! I pointed out to them with a post on the thread that now we all knew how'd they'd gotten over 10,000 posts apiece. (I think it was that many; if not, it was close.)

If I'm having a, shall we say? "lively" conversation and I get bored, I'll just drop off posting. Or if I catch myself using the same argument over and over again, I'll do the same. Sometimes I'll say, "I'm done here," just to let the poster know I read his/her last post. This is an interesting and fun brain exercise. Best not take it too seriously.

    I did not!!

I do it all the time - the only time I stick around is if I've been bluntly misunderstood - and I'll leave when I explain myself and it still doesn't clarify things for the other person.

I once debated another member on the definition of part of a sentence for 3 months... pretty much posting on the thread every day. I DID win, though.

    Is that a bad thing?

In all honesty - if the person is worth responding to, I will respond. Usually how I would prefer to end these situations is eventually reaching a point of detente where we agree to disagree but respect each other's opinions.

If they're not worth responding to, the smart thing to do is just ****ing leave.

If you don't declare victory in some unjudged "debate", then leap and hoot and declare the other guy to have lost or been "pwned" or something similar, they you've lost, lost I say!

And if you do lose, so what?

No, if the discussion gets tiresome, it's time to click the "new posts" button and go on to something else.
