Survivalists shouldn't be confused with crazy militia shoot people types.
Although there are some blended groups, most are not like that.

No, I'm not finding fault. I'm saying what if they're right.

Sometimes, I get - not scared, but really concerned that things could just go ass-over-teakettle here, and I'd rather not be around when it happens.

I actually used to dream of the day....

But now I'm older and don't think it sounds like so much fun anymore.

Doesn't mean I'll let the bastids run me out. In fact, we're gonna kick it until the trend towards a crappy dystopia appears irreversible, then head to maybe New Zealand. Somewhere far off and not rich in exploitable resources.

After reading The_Patriot's post about his dad's comments following Waco, and knowing my own feelings on the subject, have any of you considered relocating. If so, where would you move and why.

I've thought about living abroad temporarily (for a year or so), but I don't think I'd want to do it permanently. Some places that I think would be cool to live include Spain, Brazil, Czech Republic, Japan, China, or Australia.

I don't think they want us in New Zealand. It's been my dream locale, ever since a kiwi friend told me that it's a lot like Minnesota.

Oddly enough I had wanted to spend a year in China, Russia, or South Korea. Different cultures and languages fascinate me. I do know once I'm done with school and start working that my goals will be to see the world.

What do you call those people - survivalists. I wonder how far from reality they are. I mean, if that which they fear comes upon us, they're going to be the only ones who are prepared.

Some general prep for an emergency is just good sense, a few of my friends who live up in the high desert near here have been settin up their place for a while, adding a little each year. So I got an emergency bolt hole.

I'm don't think we're gonna do much here but slide back into peasantry.

Not with a bang, but a whimper...

I've read all those books. No need to live it.

Oh hell no. I am NOT an outdoorsy person.

Me neither. I would much rather visit the major cities of the world and the cultural centers within certain nations.

How are you with languages, by the way?

I love studying languages. The only ones I know in detail are English and Spanish. However, I taught myself to read the Cyrillic alphabet and to read the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets of Japanese. I don't know much vocabulary in those languages, but I do love learning languages and how to read various writing systems. My next goals are to learn to read Hebrew and Korean.

Was it very difficult to learn Spanish? Because I think if work will pay for it, I may take them up on it.

I hated spanish...cheated my way through the second year, I'm ashamed to say. Damned verb conjugations and male/female differentiation. Plus, I can't roll my R's.

I didn't think Spanish was very hard. Once you learn how to conjugate the verbs it become easier. It's easy to spell in Spanish because in Spanish there are hardly any spelling exceptions and almost every word sound exactly how it's spelled (unlike in English). Spanish draws a lot of words from the same roots as we use in English.

I am extremely displeased with the political culture and suburban life in the states. It's a real turnoff. I'd like to move to Russia and work for an NGo when I grad or possibly work for the government and work overseas. If those don't pan out I can teach English in Japan for a bit while I figure things out.

From everything I've heard, Russia is one of the gloomiest places on earth (aside from third-world hellholes and war zones). It has one of the highest rates of suicide and alcoholism in the world, and nasty winter weather to boot. There are lots of countries where I could see myself living for a while, but Russia definitely isn't one of them. It just seems so depressing.

Too funny, comparing both answers. :)

The people are cold and seem rude, but there is an alternate pace to life, I lived in the former USSR for 3 years in one of the lesser developed regions, Russia is very nice in comparison. High cost of livinga nd other aspects are what is really the issue. Russia isnt particularly gloomy but may have that image overseas. What you hear and see is usually nothing like Russia actually is for the most-part. I'll be there this summer for a month or two and see how I like it. I enjoyed it last time I was there.

Russia is the most complicated major language on earth. Lithuanian is the hardest language of more than half a million people or somesuch.

Anybody know what places have the best cost-of-living?

I guess it depends how you define "best." Are we measuring cost-of-living versus the coolness of the location? If so, I don't think Austin, TX can be beat...cheap rents and a great atmosphere. If we're only talking about foreign destinations, Uruguay is very cheap and very cool.

Intriguing.

Simply because what's left of my family and my best friend forever live here, I doubt that I'll ever relocate. But I sure do get curious, and maybe a little wistful.

I don't think I could do Texas, though. I give new meaning to "cranky" when it comes to heat and humidity.

I considered relocating to Brazil when I inherited. Even bought the Rosetta Stone Portuguese. Start a business worth more than fifty grand and hire native Brazilians, and they fast track your citizenship.

I'll probably never leave Wyoming, but it's nice to consider my options.

My accent is atrocious. My German teacher told me that I reminded her of a deaf Turk.

My work requires me to travel a lot and live in Canada under diplomatic status. I must say that Canada is a pretty peaceful place and I feel relaxed here. I do miss my home town in the U.S. and I fly there when I can to visit friends and family.

Politics would never drive me to relocate unless my country was becoming unravelled in a very obvious way. A lot of people don't know how to shut out politics so they begin to forget that it doesn't truly affect them. Your world is what you make of it. If you fill your world with politics and the news, then yeah, your country is going to seem pretty screwed up and you might not want to live there anymore.

People more or less live the same version of life everywhere. There are BIG cultural differences and that can bring a lot of nuance, don't get me wrong, but I mean, wherever you are you still have to think about putting three squares on the table, relating to other people, being right with yourself, etc. For those kinds of things, it doesn't matter where you are in most of the world.

I'd never move. Albeit, I considered Austailia when Obama got in...more and moreso everyday actually, but I think, as many have said about their own states, that I'll be just fine in Alabama with a Gov that does what is best for his state.
