well what's typically missed is that there is a transitory nature to "poverty". What I mean by that is, at some point (usually in the early 20s) we usually have lived under the poverty line. I know that my wife and I did while I worked one job for a year waiting for her to finish up nursing school. Its not as if people that live in poverty necessarily stay there their whole lives. Now we could be classified as lower middle class, and hopefully I will have a job offer this week (as I just graduated with my degree) and even assuming that I make a little on the lower end of the pay scale, we should move firmly into the middle class. Sure there are people who might live below the poverty line for a majority of their lives, but aside from medical issues, nobody really has an excuse to continue to live like that.

Its like unemployment. Poverty is going to be there because its a macro evaluation. But most people aren't living their entire lives in poverty just as most people aren't living their entire lives unemployed.

I think most of us start out with little of our own, but that doesn't mean we are poor. Poor should be reserved for those who seem to be stuck in that position no matter what efforts they make. If they make no efforts to move up, then they have chosen to be poor. Far be it from me to mess with their freedom to choose...

living in poverty? i think you are confused. are you imagining that the "poverty line" is a measurement of poverty, or a measurement of disparity? (hint; its' not the first)

It's interesting that you brought this up because when it comes to the Baby Boomers I don't think that Gloria and Meathead would have been very comfortable with Archie passing down his "values" to their children.
Also, we need to legalize recreational drugs and prostitution.

Archie Bunker types aside, even the nicest of old men are usually lacking in "mellow" when it comes to raising children...
I love when the grandkids visit, but after a few weeks it gets a bit hard on the ears. They don't come with mute buttons.....

This is your goal huh, to have US citizens as poor as "South America or Sub Saharan Africa or the far east"? That is where we differ.
