Nationalism:

: a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries
: a desire by a large group of people (such as people who share the same culture, history, language, etc.) to form a separate and independent nation of their own

Globalism:

:
a national policy of treating the whole world as a proper sphere for political influence

America First or America, one part of the Global Community?

Funnily enough the two are not mutually exclusive but complementary.

I think you have to be aware of the global community and try to interact with it. But humanity is still far too splintered right now to have a for real global government. So each nation-state needs to look after their own. So the American government should focus on the freedom and prosperity and concerns/problems of America first, while being aware of and participating in the global political sphere as well.

I think for now "nationalism" works out. I think the ideal is globalism, but that the human race is just not at that point yet. It's not to say that we shouldn't try to engage on the global scale, we have to. It's not to say that it's always for our people over everyone else. Surely we cannot genocide a people for our gains, no matter how great. But the primary focus for now will be on the individual countries. Within the global structure, we need to look out for America's needs and goals.

I'm not sure it's purely one or the other, but more like an add mixture that right now favors nationalism a little more than globalism.

I'm a globalist, for sure. I like seeing American hegemony and I reap the benefits of it every day. At the same time, I am a domestiphile, in that I like staying State's side and consciously chose a job which does not require me to travel abroad. Call me a cake and eat it too kind of dude.

Re: Nationalism versus Gloabalism

What would that have to do with false dichotomies? I mean, besides.....nothing.

“We will no longer surrender this country or its people to the false song of globalism,” Trump promised during a speech in Washington.

“I am skeptical of international unions that tie us up and bring America down,” he claimed. “And under my administration, we will never enter America into any agreement that reduces our ability to control our own affairs.
“The nation-state remains the true foundation of happiness and harmony.”

And

"Our politicians have aggressively pursued a policy of globalization -- moving our jobs, our wealth and our factories to Mexico and overseas," he said, reading from prepared remarks and using teleprompters. "Globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very, very wealthy. I used to be one of them. Hate to say it, but I used to be one of them."

And

"Globalization has made the financial elite who donate to politicians very, very wealthy ... but it has left millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and heartache," Trump told supporters during a prepared speech targeting free trade in a nearly-shuttered former steel town in Pennsylvania.
