Christ said God is spirit. Revelation says that the heavens and earth "fled" and no place was found for them. They disappeared.
That seems to point to a dimension science has no grasp of.

In this context , what is spirit? How do you know what spirit is?? What real world phyisical reference can you use to explain what spirit is, or can it only be explained in metaphysical and conceptual terms?

I think it means anything you need it to mean. Back at the time of the authoring of that text there was no conceptual terms for metaphysics in our terms. Ideas between life and death, Gods and spirit had much simpler context. And it had to be that way.

What I find funny about spirit is when I started the failed debate over the 2045 Initiative (Android bodies, human brains), one of the few posters mentioned what an abomination "science fiction" it was and came across as speaking from a religious perspective. Which is all good and well.
It got me thinking. What portion of a cybernetic human makes him or her an "abomination"? If I get a prosthetic arm am I an abomination? If I get 50% of my body reconstructed scientifically?
Where I was really getting to was where is the "spirit" housed? In that discussion it seemed to be the brain.
As relative to this debate/discussion. Why would the spirit be housed in the brain?
And if it is, why would it the spirit die if the brain survived?
Or do you have to have a % of your mortal coil still in tact for your spirit to be intact?

Those are the pieces that fascinate me.

It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

It's the stuff that's left when all the matter is gone.

So, spirit is energy?

That's not what I meant. Spirit is what is left when all the stuff studied by physics is gone. Someone who believes spirit exists, in this sense, cannot consistently believe in the ontological completeness of physics.

Agreed.

But it's only useful if you have enough midi-chlorians in your body.

Immaterial objects are spiritual. It refers to a thing (as in, a particular being, as opposed to an idea or category) that isn't material.

... what is spirit?

Nothing. There are no spirits. The only things that exist are subject to scientific scrutiny. We may not know all of them yet, but applying reason and logic, we will eventually know them.

'Spirit' is a fiction which those who wish to believe in 'life after death' find essential.

It's been said that Jesus Christ is: Jesus Consciousness of God.

There is a Jesus, but there is no Christ.

There are no gods either.

We've got spirit yes we do
We've got spirit how bout you

You are absolutely positive of that...HOW?

Or is that just a guess about REALITY that you are offering without calling it a guess?

Really?

You are sure of that...HOW?

Or is it just a guess about the REALITY of existence?

I have absolutely no idea.

I can think of no way anyone can know at this time.

It appears that all people can do is to make guesses on this issue...but I see no unambiguous evidence that would lead to a meaningful guess.

Because one's self, one's identitity is a function of processes in the brain. When our brains stop, so do we. If you cannot understand this so be it.

On what do you base this assertion.

same thing that you and I base our belief on that there is spirit

:lamo pretty funny actually...he just thinks he is right, we just think we are right

but I know I am...

I base my belief that spiritual things exist on metaphysics. I doubt that he even knows what metaphysics is.
