So, How Tall do you want the Wall to be ?

Except for the whole anchor baby situation which is not going to change. Except for people coming here to engage in crimes and sell drugs. The people we have to worry about most aren't the ones who want to be productive citizens, it's the ones who want to take advantage of the system. It isn't just a wall we need to erect, it's a whole system that stops them from crossing the border, period. Dead or alive.

I live 50 miles from the border; I am all for stopping the masses. Building a wall and arming it the way that you are suggesting will not happen. Dont pretend that we will ever put mines and have machine gunners manning vast stretches of desert. Your idea is complete fantasy. Even if Trump was elected he wont be able to do what you are suggesting, not unless ISIS moved into Mexico. But even then we are not going to put mines at the border. And we are not going to build a wall either. Not only would it cost tax payers too much money for false hope, it would take too long to be of any use. It is a very long ways from San Diego to Brownsville.

The wall should high enough to make the anti-wall crowd's heads explode, and keep illegals out.

Has anyone ever thought of English only t/o the US? From job requirement to applying for anything to reading the paper to watching TV to making a phone call to grocery shopping.

A couple of attempts have been made at the state level. I'm fine with it to be honest. I encounter so many senior citizens who don't speak English in my profession collecting medicare and it makes me wonder how many of them are illegal immigrants who knew they didn't have to bother learning it.

The ability to speak English is not a prerequisite for American citizenship.

Seems easy. 75% of Mexico's exports are to the US and total $269 billion. Mexico has a $90 billion trade surplus with the US. I would think a 5% tariff would hardly be noticeable and would raise the money in 3-5 years.

Trump would have to have the Senate repeal NAFTA to impose a 5% import tariff. Would that 5% be in addition to the average 5.72% tariff which would already be imposed if NAFTA is repealed? That is over 10% increase which is more than "hardly" noticeable. Realistically do you believe the Senate would repeal the treaty just to build a wall which will cost $$$ to maintain and monitor, its unrealistic. Keep in mind those Republican senators will have no love for a Pres Trump, but politicians don't bear grudges do they?

I am not running for president. It isnt like I pretending that I wasnt generalizing. So yes I can say whatever I want no matter how much you disprove of it.

I still maintain that it would be better to fix the problem, instead of building a expensive wall that wont work as intended.

Well again, thats because he generalized. People who have actually put thought into it suggest the wall is only one piece. You have to have someone watching the wall.

there's shouldn't be a wall.... it's unnecessary.

treating illegal immigrants to benefits that only citizens should enjoy is also unnecessary.

the fact of the matter is this, any country that makes the choice to not protect it's borders, in some fashion, gets what it deserves in due course.
portions of this country filling up with millions of people who bear loyalty to another country will have it's consequences.... and if you're a fan of the USofA, they won't be "good" consequences.

the problem too many folks have is either they view the immigration of today as the same as it was when immigrants cam through ellis island... or , on the other side, they view immigration today as an invading army.
neither is true or accurate....
unchecked/unregualted immigration is a problem on all fronts.... but it's going to take much smarter policies that " build a fence" or " open the borders" to address is adequately....going either route, to me, is simply saying " **** the United States, our national identity is worthless... let's kill it"

A wall is for more than just keeping out immigrants. Criminals and Enemies arent sneaking in to get healthcare. They want to steal and kill. The only way to stop that is to stand in their way.

We're already halfway there. 700 miles have been built, and you dont actually need a physical fence for a lot of the border. Just eyeballs.

If you have the man power to watch the wall, then you dont really need the wall itself. If thats the case a fence would work the same way.

That isnt a wall it is a fence. And it isnt even the same type of fence. Some are better than others.

I agree with having the proper amount of border patrol to do the actual job of defending our borders.

While I agree that we won't do it, that's really the biggest problem. We lack the will to do what it takes to solve the problem. We're not going to do anything, the American people will talk about it a lot, but in the end, we're just going to sit here and continue to take it up the backside because that's what we do. That's why this nation isn't great anymore. As a nation, we're just a bunch of ******s who talk the talk but refuse to walk the walk. That's why we're in decline.

No you were just talking ****. There is no way that we would have put minefields at any of our borders. That is because this is the USA not China, and we are not really being invaded by a military force. We are being invaded by a bunch of assholes that we should be arresting for their crimes. If we would just at least uphold our immigration laws then people wouldnt be so willing to cross the border knowing that they would immediately be deported or sent to prison. Or if there is ant actually jobs for the assholes to steal from American youth. When I was a kid I worked the berry fields in Oregon for spending money. Later in my teens I worked at xmas tree farms for beer money and what not.. Todays youth cant really do those jobs since Mexicans have taken those job markets over. Hell I dont care about legal workers, But illegals ought to be arrested on federal charges. Tax the **** out of legal migrate workers since they use a lot of our resources. And fine the illegals huge amounts for our troubles.

I agree with you on all of that. The wall isn't the whole of the fix for immigration, it's just the first line of defense against the unwashed hordes. Even if they get past it, there should be nothing here for them but arrest and deportation.

Barrier then.

No, I said fence. AT any rate we seem to have gone from "Gorbachev tear down this wall!" To people wanting to build our own equivalent.

The Berlin Wall existed to keep people in. We want to keep people out. There's a difference.

Maybe they should construct some test walls of varying heights along the border at known access points and see what it takes to discourage the undocumented from crossing into full blown illegal.

If history is any indicator, officials will build a test section, cleverer humans will figure out how to get over it, then the officials will build a new section correcting that flaw and the cleverer humans will get over that one, rinse and repeat.

Meanwhile, the cleverest humans will have shifted to boats or some other method rendering the final, ultimate wall utterly pointless.

With Trump as potus, it needs to be determined just how high the wall, on the border with Mexico, needs to be. Trump has indicated that he is uninterested in environmental impact statements, so we can assume there will be no bureaucratic holdup.

How high ?

Maybe two or three inches. Not tall enough for people to see it in the dark but tall enough to trip them when they run across the border at night.

You SURE it wont be used to keep us in at some point?

So long as we have the Constitution, no. If that ever goes away, then the nation has essentially ended anyhow. Don't be paranoid.

:lamo Are you saying that with a straight face?

It isnt like we would be able to climb it with all those guards standing around. And if it is so dangerous that we need a guarded wall shouldnt we blacklist traveling to Mexico?
