Is it always right to try and be fair?

To be fair means to be equal, or as equal as possible.

What are your thoughts?

I think fair does not mean "to be equal," whatever, in turn, that means. "Fair" and "right" turn out to be nearly synonymous, in my view. So to be right just is to be fair.

That depends on what you mean. It's what you learn in childhood and in many cases the results will be fine. In many others you will lose your career.

The problem is being fair is an illusion in terms of "means to be equal." We are all similar in many ways, but we are not the exact same by any means. Therefor it makes little sense to operate as if we can use outside force to ensure the means to be equal. The best we can do is shift fair to being adherence to rule and standard, as a means to achieve legitimacy. So we end up treating everyone fairly by common rule, then let the chips fall where they may on uncommon outcome.

Oh, man!

You're playing with fire on this. In the world of today's world of politically correct thinking, the idea of equality has absolutely nothing to do with the idea of fairness.

I think it's cute, though, that you seem to feel the carry the same meaning.

Should equal and fair be synonymous? Why not or why are they not?

If I provide a stairway to get into my second floor business for all to use with no limitation, that is equal.

What if you are confined to a wheel chair?

Is the reduced level of standards for females in combat fair or equal? Obviously, not equal. Is it fair to her wounded comrade that is too heavy for her to carry to safety if needed?

What about the quota systems to manufacture representative populations by unrelated factors to the populations of any organization? Fair or equal?

Is the fact that the NBA is over represented by Black MEN fair or equal?

People with lower potentials, if from a disadvantaged background, are admitted into Harvard and yet in the NBA, we find very few players who are overweight, short, senior citizens. Equal or fair?

Life is not fair and it's not equal either. By that measure only are these two things the same.

I am not a psychopath, so I do try to be "fair" when dealing with people. By that I mean I am willing to concede some of my own desires so as not to step on someone else's toes. A psychopath will never consider someone else's toes as he/she tramples their way through the flowerbed to reach their goals.

That being said though, I would kill someone in a heartbeat if I believed them to be a threat to one of my loved ones.

No. Mercy is often the right moral thing, instead of fairness.

yes it is always right to attempt to be fair.

why would any one strive to be less than fair to those around them?

treating others in a fair manner does not mean treating everyone the same, it means adjusting things so that all are equal

I think "fair" isn't possible, but I think it is possible to even out the playing field a bit in terms of quality of education, access to education, access to proper nutrition etc from childhood. If two people of the same intelligence, ambition, and drive start off at vastly different planes from one another, then we have lost potential here.

But beyond that, it is up to you as the individual to make the decisions in your life that will lead you to success.
