Atheism, Is not believing in gods a belief or not?

Most are in denial about what they "believe."

They try to pretend they do not "believe" there are no gods. That is "denial."
What are you talking about? Of COURSE we believe that there isn't a God.

What does that prove?

Atheism OFTEN is a belief.

MANY atheists "believe" there are no gods.

Got the statistics on that? Or is this just an "opinion" that you throw out as if it were a fact?

Don't bother answering, I know which one, lol.

Oh, thank you for that.

So many of the atheists here are denying that atheists "believe there is no God."

Thank you.

It's just his opinion. He has no evidence to support his claims.

Are you serious?

We have a lack of a belief in a God, but atheism is not a BELIEF SYSTEM.

Take a look at the post above yours!

We don't believe in a God, but atheism is not a BELIEF SYSTEM.

Actually it mostly is a belief system.

Ummm...

...you do know the difference between:

I do not believe there are gods...and...

...I believe there are no gods.

Right?

Your 100% wrong.

Atheism*is usually defined incorrectly as a*belief*system.*Atheism is not*a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of*belief*in gods. Older dictionaries define*atheism*as "a*belief that there is no God.

Yes really, do you not understand how arguments work?

You are making the assertion here, that atheism is a belief system. It is up to YOU to provide the evidence.

I am allowing you to do it...

...and you are doing a fine job on my behalf.

Take a look at the post above yours!

That's not statistics Frank, that's one data point. Your statement is a claim to knowledge of the statistics. Surely you know the difference between isolated data and full statistics, yes?

Again, it's your opinion, that's cool. You just have a habit of phrasing your opinions as if they are facts.

One...it is "you're" not "your"...and I am never 100% wrong.

Jesus, Governess...just a few posts ago, you wrote:

Take a look at your 1202!

You are saying that atheists actively believe there are no gods.

You are working for me...showing it to be a belief system.

I personally don't believe in a God. But ATHEISM is a lack of a belief in a God.

Like I said, not all atheists believe in the same thing.

Ummm...gonna give you that one, Ikari. I do that...and many of us do here in the forum.

We ought all to watch that.

I apologize for being so adamant and not designating that as opinion. Please understand that when I am expressing matters like that...I AM just expressing opinion.

But even you have to see that the Governess...has an active belief that there are no gods...and also has an active belief that atheists in general (look at her wording) have an active belief that there are no gods.

Atheism OFTEN is a belief.MANY atheists "believe" there are no gods.

That many atheists believe certain definitions of gods do not exist, doesn't magically change the definition of atheists.

Bob holds no belief in the existence of deities.
Sue holds no belief in the existence of deities, and given certain definitions of gods, believes they DO NOT EXIST.

Both are atheists, they meet the criteria of having no belief in the existence of gods.
That sue has other beliefs associated with deities (non-existent) is something you can discuss with Sue.

If you *really* want to use atheism, you could then, if you do it accurately, use words like "Strong atheist, weak atheist", etc., as long as you can explain what you mean with those terms.

Some atheists do have an active disbelief in gods. Atheism in general, however, describes the generic no belief in gods. This includes the passive and the active. Who knows which is more. You'll tend to hear from the active atheists more than the passive, but that doesn't speak to the actual statistics. This board, for instance, will likely have more active than not, and even the passive here will tend to be more vocal than the general population. that's because this is a debate board and we all come here so we can run our mouths.

That's because many of the atheists that I've run into also don't believe in the possibility of a God. But not all atheists believe that.

You stated that "of course atheists believe there are no gods."

Are you taking that back...or do you stick with it?

There is a difference between saying:

I "believe" there are no gods...and...

I do not "believe" there are gods.

Try to understand that.
