What are the top five

None of the above.

Integrity: Required to have trust
Moral Courage: Ensures a person is interested in righteousness over their own welfare
Thoughtfulness: Nothing better than someone I respect doing something thoughtful for me
Humility: Opposite of arrogance, good way to ensure one is self accountable; aids in empathy
Affection: “Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.” - C.S. Lewis

Edit: I'm thinking thoughtfulness would fall under affection, so I'd probably add sense of humor. A great sense of humor, when done right, can put people at ease with one another and as they say, laughter is the best medicine.

human characteristics that you value/admire/possess/strive for and why?

1. Empathy

Walk in other people's shoes before judging them.

2. Forgiving

Be the better man & don't let hate destroy your life.

3. Love

Share your love, your happiness & express gratitude to the people you care about. Be happy for other people's success & not jealous.

4. Selflessness

Help others.

5. Responsibility

Have integrity & recognize your errors

1. Happy - I enjoy people who are having a good time with life.
2. Stable - If you don't have your **** together, if you're always a victim, if everyone you meet is an asshole... you know what they say.
3. Good sportsman - I like people who are competitive but know how to lose. A skilled debater, one who doesn't engage in insults or mischaracterizations especially.
4. Interested - I like people who are passionate about something, anything, be it a hobby or a cause. If you're interested, you're interesting to me.
5. Straightforward - Someone who is honest and has all cards on the table, I hate it when some people won't speak plain, but will obfuscate or bull****.

human characteristics that you value/admire/possess/strive for and why?

emotional generosity -because so many good things come from it, primarily...empathy.
self-awareness coupled with courage- it's empowering. It enables you to take personal responsibility for who you are; for your words and actions and to make changes that create greater happiness and satisfaction
humility - allows you to make room for others
gratitude - keeps you from becoming bitter, or envious of others. Helps you maintain happiness
keeping your word - people learn to trust and count on you which creates the best of friendships

(In no particular order)

And I'll add a sixth to the equation as well: Common Sense... Which, unfortunately, isn't terribly common.

Empathy

Mindfulness

Respect

Courage

The thirst for knowledge (not sure what one word I would use to describe this trait)
