Since this Jordanian pilot was burned to death I have been thinking. There was outrage all across America at this inhumane act. Yet, so many of these same people have no problem worshiping a God who is going, according to their beliefs, torture people for eternity. These people go to church and sing praise and talk about how wonderful and loving God is, but seem oblivious to the demented torture this God I going to bestow on millions of people. Strange.

And that brave pilot was a Muslim so many Christians believe that once he died in that blaze, he then went on to suffer for all eternity in Hell.

But torture is OK if God is the one ordering it.

Actually, according to Christian doctrine, it's a free will issue, not one of a God who tortures. The torture, if you believe in the doctrine, is in Hell, and God doesn't condemn anyone to hell- they condemn themselves.

I dont think you have a real grasp on what Christians believe

I spent one year at a bible college, but you might be right. I also spent over 40 years as a member of a Baptist church, but what do I know.

Perhaps that your one Baptist Church did not speak for all of Christianity maybe

So you spent 40 years studying Christianity and you still think that God tortures people in hell?

I wasn't a member of only one church in these years, different churches depending on where I lived at the time. I certainly know that they only speak for there individual congregations, but these are the beliefs of these churches I attended.

No, I don't. The churches I have attended believed it though. I think you will find this belief is prevalent among Christian churches.

Not any church I have been to nor any scriptural evidence to back that up

God doesn't torture people for eternity. When the angels rebelled, God created a hell for them. With mankind, He has given us every possible opportunity to not go there as well. If we end up in Hell, it's by OUR CHOICE, not His. Anyone who ends up in Hell, got there based on their choice to reject God.

This is the most absurd cop out I've ever heard.

Highly doubtful... Most likely these are YOUR beliefs, taken out of context. But the bottom line is what the Bible says. So can you show me where the Bible states that God tortures people in Hell...

There is no hell. When death comes, there is nothing. You are aware of nothing, so there is nothing. Life is gone from you. That is why it is so important to live now, being present and in the moment for as long as you can each and every waking moment of the day; resist with all your might those that would send you away to fight and die for their aims, telling you that something waits for you after death, when they are taking advantage of your willingness to fight for them by enjoying their life here right now.

The main difference is that the Christians in America are not literally burning people alive for their Religious dogma. Not anymore anyway.

Why did God create hell for then, barbecue parties? There's plenty of quotes in both New and Old Testaments that being sent to hell is "God's Wraith." So the statement "god tortures people in hell" isn't incorrect.

The confusion then is your statment that you spent 40 years as a member of "a Baptist Church". Jehovah Witnesses, for instance, do not even believe in hell.

I should have said Baptist churches, though most of that time was at one church, when I was much younger.

I know that JW's don't believe in hell, it has as far as I know always been part of their doctrine. I have talked to several Christians in the past ten or so years who are devout in their belief, but they don't believe in a literal hell. That is really what I wanted to discuss. In fact, I had a pastor years ago who preached hell fire and brimstone tell me one day in private that he doubted that hell was eternal because it was so awful, but he just left it up to God. I wonder if any churches have softened their belief in hell over the years. I no longer go to church, so I really don't know what is going on in their congregations.

care to quote one of those verses?

care to quote one of those verses?

"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." John 3:36

"And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth." Revelations 11:18

Not to mention the book of Job, Sodom and Gomorrah, and Genesis where God literally kills everyone on the face of the Earth because it was "corrupt." If God only kills sinners, do the sinners go to heaven or hell?

Given this winter, I, for one, look forward to an eternity around a toasty fireplace. I'll make sure to bring a large pack of marshmallows with me, I'm sure there will be no shortage of spiky things on which to roast them from.

Fair point.

nope still gods fault if it sets up the system like that

you can do what ever you like but if you don't do what I say you fry forever

unless you can actually choose to opt out of hell at some point just by saying no to going there

People fall across the spectrum. Universalism is the belief that everybody will go to heaven eventually, purgatory people where you get a second chance and either go to heaven or hell or cease to exist if not heaven, people who think one would go one way or the other upon their death, some that think we just don't exist until risen again, etc. The only safe thing is to say that in Christianity there is about as much consensus on this issue as there are on most procedural issues.
