For instance, most people don't know how a microwave works. Does that constitute magic?

When did we accept that not knowing is an acceptable reason to accept magic as a viable explanation?

Duh! magnets are magic!

Someone's been watching Thor this weekend.

It could be - for many cultures some things that are accepted as scientific fact are considered paranormal phenomena due to lack of education. No reason why magic can't be the same. Though the term magic is gimmicky - usually referring to prestidigitation.

Nope. I didn't even see the sequel. I heard it was just okay. Seems that all super hero movies second movie is just mediocre.

This thread is a reaction to some of the posts that have a hard time accepting that not knowing isn't a valid reason to go with Goddidit.

Indeed, but that doesn't make their stances rational. I like to think we've moved past the animism state of mankind, but it appears that at least some of us have not.

'Magic' is never a viable explanation...unless one is a modern-day conservative trying to explain where all the extra CO2 in the atmosphere is coming from, or why the planet is warming....

Sorry - couldn't resist. :)

The way people treat science/scientists in modern day it may as well be.

It amazes me how many people are willing to live in knowing ignorance of the processes that define modern life; whether it is to just blindly accept what is told to them or to deny it on the basis of one's own lack of perspective.

When did we accept that not knowing is an acceptable reason to accept magic as a viable explanation?

And when did we accept that accepting acceptable reasons to accept magic is acceptable? :2razz:

I'll tell you what's magic. This:

It's magic, I tell ya'. Or maybe witchcraft.

I didn't know anyone did that, actually . . . because they don't understand something, they think it's magic. More likely, they'd think it was impossible.

There is no such reality as magic.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Clarke's three laws - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A microwave operating under its normal function, no. But a microwave operating outside of its commonly accepted function, perhaps. Like if it could go invisible or something like that. It would be perceived by many as magic but would have a scientific explanation and technological base.

Most folks cannot ride a motorcycle like this:

It must be magic. ;)

That is why I always smile when people make fun of miracles in the scriptures and claim it is absurd because it is magic. Who says it is magic. Good point OP.

Is it a miracle if it's of naturally occurring origins? What people are making fun of is the claim that's a miracle on the basis of magic. Not that is occurred, but the citation of the supernatural for its cause.

It is a miracle in the sense it is outside of current human knowledge on how it was done. The microwave analogy could be applied to Christ walking on water or the parting of the Red Sea.

Magic and alchemy, yes.

But does that make it a proper belief? Merely not knowing equates to Magic?

flat track; drifting before it was called drifting.

Yep. Counter steering; push left to go left. Failure to learn this basic technique causes many single vehiicle motorcycle "accidents".

This thread reminds me of doggie slight of hand magic.
It's hard to impress a dog with magic tricks because just about everything we do is magic to them already.
