I'm not a believer or a disbeliever but I ask is it not hellish to think a "spirit" is confined to say one house for however long? What possible explanation could there be for such an existence?

Also, it does not make sense to me that this spirit could be driven out by a human being. Do we possess the "powers" to do that?

Just leave the drunk in peace its his own home. But feel free to join him.

I've always imagined it would be fun to have supernatural control.

Imagine that - lol - all the trouble I'd cause.

I'm a disbeliever (in ghosts, in hell, in souls, and in all aspects of the paranormal and supernatural generally).

But I think your question is interesting and I don't think that addressing it logically requires "belief" so, here goes...

I think your position sort of presupposes that the "ghost" can't leave the house (or wherever).

Do we know that to be a "fact"?

Maybe the "ghost" lives in that house but is free to wander the "world" (our world, the spirit world, this dimension, others, etc...) at will.

Maybe the "ghost" chooses to stay in the house but I've never heard of a "haunting" (and understand, I don't really keep up on ALL incidents of haunting) where the haunting is going on 24/7.

From what little I know I get the impression that the actual haunting (the "ghost" coming into contact with the physical world and/or with human beings) is sort of episodic.

Like, the family moves into the house and everything is good for a while, but then **** starts going crazy. But not 24/7 crazy. At first the residents will notice that the TV is shutting on and off (for example) but then that'll stop. A couple days later another resident will find kitchen cabinets opening and closing, maybe stuff falling out of cupboards, but then that'll stop too. Maybe a few nights after that the residents will hear chains rattling in a child's room but when they go to investigate, no chains physically in the room, and no more spooky chains rattling sound.

The point is, there's plenty of time between episodes for the "ghost" to be wandering off and doing other things. I don't know of any reason to believe that the "ghost" just goes into hibernation (or whatever ghosts do when they're not actively stirring up ****) locally.

For all we know the "ghost" is in Palm Beach playing shuffleboard with other ghosts during the downtime between incidents of active haunting.

Also, it does not make sense to me that this spirit could be driven out by a human being. Do we possess the "powers" to do that?

"The power of Christ compels you!!!"

It isn't "us" who are driving the ghost out.

It's the power of some other paranormal/supernatural force or being that we're either calling in to service or requesting to act on our behalf.

Whether that paranormal/supernatural force or being is the Christian God, or voodoo magic, or a friendly "ghost" or whatever is irrelevant.

I've never heard any stories (again, I'm ignorant of all but a very few such stories) where a human being physically combats a "ghost" and forces it from a residence through sheer will power or brute strength.

I don't believe that is what a ghost actually is, so no, I don't really think your line of questioning is on the right track. I tend to suspect that a ghost is some sort of emotional energy, but more like an empty shell than anything of actual or lasting substance.

(some folks are just a little too analytical)

The words "emotional energy" have been used frequently in ghost stories but I always go the Holocaust to counter that concept as the horror experienced there was unsurpassed in human history. Some theories claim high energy levels at the time of dearth may contribute to the suspicion that ghosts do exist. Regardless of fact or fiction to be stuck on earth in any super natural form is not my idea of a good time had by all.

I don't believe they are stuck on eath, but rather the "ghost" isnt them, but just an empty thought form of some kind.

That cracked me up because I'm an analyst by trade.

Now I'm wondering, which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Poltergeists are another matter.

That appears to be latently telekinetic small children with parents who anthropomorphize random events/sounds, "creating" an "entity" responsible for them. This provides the child's telekinesis with a focus.

Had a crazy series of poltergeist episodes as a kid while my mom and her friend and her son were traveling the country while our dads were overseas in Vietnam. Started out as a noise in the car door no mechanic could find. Mom and Jane started calling it "Ralph". Got really dramatic.

The egg came first.

Lots of creatures laid eggs before there were chickens. Anyway, I had eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner. Since breakfast comes before dinner, obviously the egg came first.

As for ghosts, beware of living near a chicken slaughtering establishment. It's full of poultrygeists.

Depending on your definition of what a 'ghost' is, there's no reason it should necessarily be malevolent. Why drive it out at all? As for the capacity to do so, thoughts are energy. They can be focused and directed to operate cumulatively with effects beyond physicality. Religious rituals (like 'exorcism' or even prayer) are only the more well known means by which to achieve such effects. Not that the average church-goer has any conception of this, of course. Prayer, when practiced as it should be, is no different from meditation, which even an avowed Atheist might enjoy. There's nothing that exists supernaturally that's actually 'super' in any sense. No more than certain animals are able to see in the infra-red or hear things beyond the human auditory range.

From listening to people that claim experiences with ghosts I am curious why some are friendly and others seem to want revenge or death to the living. Isn't it bad enough to be a ghost much less a pissed off ghost?

If There Actually Are Ghosts Would That Not Be a Definition of Hell?

Depends on the house. Play boy Mansion is my choice of house to haunt.
