I am happy, content, and enjoying my life without any feelings of anything missing or any emptiness what-so-ever.

I have two intelligent, caring, and well adjusted kids who are working their way into adulthood.
Been happily married since June of 1990.

I've accomplished this while being a highly agnostic person with a slight lean towards atheism.

I most surely don't believe in the "god" portrayed in the Bible or the "god" most "christians" seem to insist created all this.

In fact I don't believe in any of the stuff Abrahamic religions posit.

This gets a little interesting sometimes as I have some Jehovah's Witnesses as in-laws.

The closest thing to a "religion" I'm attracted to would be Taoism.

And yet somehow I have a great family, great friends, and a fulfilling and comfortable existence.

I have that - without any "god" running my life or consciousness.

And I surely don't concern myself with wondering why I'm here or what my purpose is.
Nor do I worry about why the Earth is here, or why animals, including humans, are here.

I do not concern myself with gods and spirits either good or evil nor do I serve any.

I don't think you understand how it works, you don't get punished now for being a godless pagan. The punishment is in the future where no one can verify it.

If the punishment were to come now, religion would collapse because everyone could see it doesn't really happen.

I'm also an atheist, and find myself obsessively ruminating over purpose throughout the day. Congratulations on living what sounds like a wonderful life, here's your prize......:peace all that I can come up with.

If Dragonfly is right, and there is no god, does that mean that there is no afterlife either?

I have to wonder about the people who think that the only thing stopping us from raping and pillaging others is the fear of the afterlife.

If that's the only thing that's stopping them, I think they should be institutionalized

Not necessarily, I have read studies "not sure if new evidence contradicts them" that showed the human mind could extend its effects into space. Theoretically, this could be what some humans call the soul, though this certainly isn't provocation to believe in the afterlife, it's a neat thought to entertain.

"Afterlife" being what?

Our consciousness continues on?
Ghosts?
Souls?

Another dimension?

Separate places for the "good" and the "bad"?

It's a lovely and comforting thought to think, one day "you'll" be able to meet up with your dead relatives and enjoy eternity in paradise.

Is that what you're asking?

I think it's more getting satisfaction from the idea that those who do rape and pillage will get what's coming to them eventually, even if they get by with it in this life.

By the way.

"Right" about what?

I never stated anything about anything was "right" or "wrong" did I?

As an agnostic I'm generally of the "I don't know, and I don't pretend to know one way or the other" variety.

There were many reasons that I became an atheist, but one the realizations that helped me to that point was realizing that the vast majority of the world's population (~66%) live completely happy, moral, successful, content and fulfilling lives without ever knowing, believing or flat out rejecting God and Christianity. Like them, I'm good without God.

That is an illogical conclusion. There can be an afterlife without a god.

So is Nessie.

There are a lot of people out there who simply can't handle the idea that there might not be an "answer" as to why certain things happen.

They need a safety blanket of there being a "larger purpose" designed by something bigger than anything we can conceive.

That whole thing about "we must be here for a purpose" concept.

Some people can't handle the idea that, perhaps, there is no purpose. No grand design. No reason beyond the biological fact that our parents had sex and conceived a child.

The very same reason a cockroach exists might be the very same reason "we" exist.

That maybe, there is no reason.

Some people seriously can't handle that concept.

Maybe - this is ALL there really is.

Hmmm. Didn't work with all those priests molesting kids.

Maybe they know something we don't?

If so, it would be an awful waste of space.

Oh.

I thought I read the word "atheist" somewhere in your posts. An agnostic is quite a different thing. All of us are agnostics to a degree, as no one really knows for sure.

Pretty much, yes.

Afterlife being whatever we were before inhabiting mortal bodies, being a spiritual and not a material existence.

Although the difference between an agnostic and a non-agnostic is that the former is humble enough to actually admit their ignorance.

But they won't. Al they need to do is repent and they get away free.
