Who is / was the greatest author of all time?

Homer. Because dawn cannot have enough rosy fingertips.

Pam

The scary thing is: this line about Eos also comes to my mind first, whenever someone mentions Homer. Some readers we are...

:)

But seriously, to think about it, why, answering this question, I haven't even considered Homer, Virgil, Sophocles et al - or the author of the Epic of Gilgamesh, for that matter? Surely they were (or appear to be) literary pioneers of greater consequence than Cervantes?

I guess when something is so deeply internalzied by the extant culture, it ceases to be anyone's personal achievement - becomes a background and a set of standards for further judgement.

He knows he's one of my favorites...the ornery no-good rascal!

Looks like it's going to be one of those "let's pick on Jack days!" :lamo: It was AP's turn a few days ago...we do strive for fairness, you know!

Jeez, 2m.
Stop being so freaking pedantic.
This sort of behavior afflicts posters who hang out with mangas.
Enjoy Ann Coulter's next opus

Seems to me that someone who opines on "the greatest author of all time" should use our language properly. Just sayin' . . .

Too many logic and plot cul de sacs.

But that's the point of the series. The characters are talking very deeply very heavily about philosophical issues. And the series is made even more so when you realize how transhuman the characters are.

Sorry, but if the story defies logic and the plot must be continually rescued by pulling rabbits out of hats then it's no longer literature; it's just filler to support attractive covers & titles on paperbacks at airport bookstores. In other words, it's just marketing and greed.

I am not going to follow you down the hole of Dune sequel plotting, partly because I read them all decades ago. I don't remember details, but I remember my impression, which was that so many new powers were so often introduced that I concluded that anything was possible anytime. No thanks.

let's not blame Mangas for Jack's afflictions ... speaking of the half injun ... he's planning to do some pedantic posting on debatepolitics in the near future ... (I told him Jack missed him, and Mangas having the soft heart he does, said, "if that %$#*&^%#@ wants me to post on DP, I will ...")

Hey, Bori.
I began to suspect you were THAT Bori from the not-to-be-mentioned website, yesterday.
You were loitering around the topless politician thread.
On a side note, congrats on your #3 all-time poster status on the not-to-be-mentioned website.
In addition to Mangas, maybe you could talk VM and Shalalee into coming over here.
This site is much better, Mangas can use much more of his "colorful" rhetoric over here.

I've not been in touch with Shal, I hear VM has been on (no?) and I suggested he post here on a more regular basis (but haven't gotten a response), and Mangas told me in an e-mail that he planned to start posting here ... I probably won't post on a regular basis ... my two recent exchanges with Conservative and JC have taken some of the fun out of it ... we'll see ... but good to see you again ...
