Would you rather be deaf or blind? What of the two senses do you value more? :coffeepap

Deaf is by 100% thus far.

Just I'd like to state that being deaf now is better than being blind. The issue not mentioned is time. Being born with a sensual abnormality might be a lot worse for then writing and reading would become difficult as means of communication.

Absolutely deaf. I've thought about this before. When deaf you can still live a perfectly normal life without outside assistance. You can lipread, watch movies with subtitles, drive, work, everything. Some can even speak fairly normal. Besides, in some cases it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have some peace and quiet.

Also, personally, I spend a LOOOOT of time on the internet and computers. None of that would have to change.

As Helen Keller said, "Blindness cuts me off from things, deafness cuts me off from people."

There really are three kinds of deafness:

1. Pre-lingual, cultural deaf. Sign language is their preferred means of communication.

2. Oral deaf. Often pre-lingually deaf. Spoken language is their preferred means of communication.

3. Late deafened adult. Post-lingually deafened. Doesn't sign and/or doesn't have anyone to sign to.

There's also hard of hearing, of course. But that's not deaf.

This sounds like a poll done to find suitable recruits for the Democrat party.

Peace and quiet indeed. You got to love how Daredevil sleeps at night:

Lipreading might be learned to be practiced so well that one may be incorporated with law enforcement agencies and read out mafia across their windows with goggles while another one types! I thought about it also.

Not to glamorize or anything, it is best to have our senses in order. But if one has to go it is the hearing sense while we have learned and can continue practicing written communication.

Indeed, it's honestly not even a debate. Being deaf is far better.

Here's another one to ponder:

Would you rather lose a leg or an arm? And why?

The real issue is whether to be on a wheel or to isolate one's self from things that require two hands. This one is a lot harder. I'd take the wheel for I could compensate movement.

Wheel? We're talking about one leg. The prostetic legs today are amazing, look at that one Olympic runner.

I choose lose a leg, because you don't need much dexterity with your leg. A prostetic can emulate your real leg pretty well. There's nothing you can't do, really, if you lose a leg. An arm on the other hand, we're nowhere near being able to produce a good working hand. You could never type well, play guitar, driving would be hard, etc.

Yes I thought of driving being complicated with losing a leg. But since the prosthetic leg did not occurred to me I thought it would be difficult to press for speed or breaks (unless it is an automatic car).

Still the leg is a better option if one must chose. The wheel is not bad if a prosthetic leg is not available for some reason neither.

I would rather live in a silent world than a black world any day.

Well yeah, unless you were born deaf. Then you would not be able to hear, speak, read text or lips. You will be stuck with contemplating Scarlet Johanson and that's it.

Leg, its almost the same decision. I can do a lot more with two arms than I can do with two legs.

Deaf if I have to hear silly questions like this all the time; blind if I have to read them online.

A leg. Whithout two arms, how can I applaud threads like this one?:applaud

By slapping your butt with your only hand. ;)

Now, participating in a thread is not mandatory.

? I think you might be confused. People born deaf can read both text and lips with education. Some can even manage basic speech.

Really? I didn't know that.
Wow, this is incredible! I'm very impressed. :)

One of my best friends who I've known since we were little kids was born deaf and he can read, write and read lips. Speech is another thing. Even after many years regularly seeing a speech coach his speech is still awful.

A few years ago he had cochlear implant surgery (bionic ear) and with that he can hear very well. However, he only wore it for a few months and stopped wearing it after the novelty of being able to hear wore off. Now he never wears it and wishes he never wasted all that money on the surgery. He says that likes being deaf better. I guess after over 40 years of peace and quiet he'd rather not hear. It was funny the first time he heard an airplane. He asked me what that noise was and I pointed to the airliner in the sky and he didn't believe me.

Thanks, Muhammed, that was very insightful. :)

I'd rather be blind, at least I could hear people saying "Get out of the way Magoo".
