So, I've been reading the "Cold Awakening Trilogy".(Very teen of me, I know.)Anyway, in this trilogy, people who are sick or dying or die get "downloaded" into androids, for lack of a better word, and they have apparent free will. They recognize that they are mechanical, but feel that they have the same rights as "living" people.

Would these "mechs" be recognized as a sentient being and awarded the same rights as living people?

What say you?

in theory, yes.

this has been a fantasy of mine for all of the years that I have been scared of death and non-existance. however, now I'm thinking that such a scenario might trap us in this plane of existance. what if we're just on one step, or if it's a waiting room of some kind? do we really want to spend eternity at the station and never get on the train?

maybe we're supposed to wilt and grow again next spring.

Not without a soul.

I'm assuming that's a given, as per the synopsis. In which case, I'd say yes.

Not in today's world, but morals and values and law would change with the technology. I heard a speaker once who pointed out that if we were able to clone ourselves, under today's laws, we would have zero rights in relation to our clone--it would be the child of our parents not us. Thought that was interesting.

I expect that if we ever get the technology to do something like this, we will have enough understanding of how the brain creates the human mind and sentience, that we would be able to verify whether this robot mind has those features and ultimately, society will be forced to make the necessary adjustments even if some won't like it.

The rights of androids and artificial intelligence will absolutely be an issue in the future. Hopefully we will learn from the struggles of race, gender, and sexuality today and reach the inclusive conclusion quickly, without first building up a tradition of oppression and bigotry.
