This is something I don't normally think about, but I found some very intriguing stuff on the issue. The first article is especially cool.

What Constitutes Proof in Ape Language Studies?

Tusker Trail: SETI News - Do Dolphins Talk?

What do you feel are indications that an animal might actually be an intelligent species?

IF a species can be proven to be intelligent, does it change how we should treat it, and how so? What if there is not proof, but ample evidence to constitute reasonable doubt? How should humanity ethically interact and coexist (or not?) with a species it suspects may be an intelligent species? Do any "natural rights" that you feel a human has specifically pertain to A) humanity alone, B) to socially and/or technologically civilized species, C) to intelligent species, or something else?

We actually know that crows are highly intelligent and also dolphins. Elephants and wolves even have some sort of burial rights as it were... i guess... where they feel loss and even "sing" for the dead. Dogs are also highly intelligent creatures. In other words, here on Earth, we do not lack in intelligent creatures. Some of these animals can even be considered sentient animals.

They are however far from our level of intelligence. We give them rights, as we do, but no more than a humans right.

SETI is searching for sentient life in the universe. This means that it isn't searching neccesarily for civilized life... just for creatures which have a developed sense of community and thus, emotions.

We as a species have reached that evolutionary level around 2mil years ago... or was it 3mil years ago. Anyway, our great grandfather basically. the one before homo habilis.
